About The Position

The Energy & Power Division writes a broad portfolio of upstream, midstream, downstream, renewable energy and power risks on a global basis. Our current team has 28 employees across four office locations in London, Texas, the UAE and Singapore and our commitment to technical underwriting supports our decision making alongside experienced engineering expertise. Markel’s customers are the most valuable stakeholders in the value chain and we work closely with our claims team to deliver the best possible experience. A great emphasis is placed on long term partnerships with both brokers and assureds and we travel extensively to build and maintain distribution networks and client relationships across the Globe. We are an established leader in our selected segments and target leadership across our full offering. We write business on both Syndicate 3000 paper at Lloyd’s and through Markel International Insurance Company Limited, and on Evanston Insurance Company paper on a non-admitted/surplus lines basis in the US. This role includes exposure to chemical-related risks and underwriting considerations. Background or interest in chemistry, chemical processes, engineering, or general scientific principles is a strong plus. Work closely with our international Energy & Marine team, gaining insight into global risk, specialty markets, and complex accounts. Position is based in Dallas, Houston, or Austin, Texas.

Requirements

  • 0–1 years of experience required
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast‑paced environment
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to follow established processes
  • Willingness to pursue insurance designations (e.g., AINS)
  • Intermediate proficiency in MS Word and Excel

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a primary point of contact for agents and brokers by gathering information on behalf of the underwriters, answering questions, resolving low‑complexity issues, and facilitating the overall servicing of accounts.
  • Support the processing of business transactions that do not require underwriter review or signoff.
  • Take necessary measures to obtain information needed to finalize inquiries and transactions, maintaining a suspense and follow‑up system for outstanding underwriting items.
  • Ensure accuracy of all information entered into internal systems and verify that all required documentation is complete and properly filed.
  • Routinely communicate with team members, agents/brokers, and key business partners—including international colleagues within our Energy & Marine division—to research, gather, and validate information needed to review, analyze, and complete transactions.
  • Utilize and adhere to internal guidelines, procedures, and service standards to ensure all assigned work is processed accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory and internal requirements.
  • Participate in problem‑solving activities to define issues, identify root causes, design and test solutions, and implement process improvements.
  • Apply continuous improvement methodologies to enhance workflow efficiency and eliminate recurring problems.
  • Under the direction of an Underwriter, attach appropriate forms, process policy changes, and support technical underwriting tasks as needed.
  • Build and maintain effective working relationships with clients, brokers, and internal teams across both wholesale and retail business units.
  • Represent the team with professionalism, confidence, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Participate in special projects and additional duties as assigned to support team operations, meet customer needs, and achieve business objectives.
