About The Position

As an Underwriting Manager, you’ll lead and develop a team of underwriters responsible for delivering high-quality, compliant residential mortgage decisions with both speed and precision. This role balances people leadership and hands-on underwriting expertise, partnering closely with cross-functional teams to improve processes, raise quality standards, and ensure we consistently win the right way—for our clients and our teammates.

Requirements

  • Prior leadership experience within a residential mortgage underwriting function.
  • Experience underwriting loans for sale in the secondary market and for portfolio retention.
  • Strong expertise evaluating residential mortgage and home equity loan applications.
  • Proven ability to analyze complex data, investor guidelines, and technical issues to reach sound underwriting decisions.
  • Working knowledge of Agency, FHA, VA, Jumbo, and investor overlay requirements.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with loan officers, vendors, and internal partners.
  • Comfort working with PC-based software applications, including Word and Excel.
  • College coursework in Business Administration or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • A leadership approach grounded in accountability, coaching, and continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach, and support a team of underwriters reviewing residential real estate–secured loans, including Conventional, FHA, VA, and Jumbo products.
  • Monitor underwriting queues, productivity, and SLA performance, adjusting resources in real time to meet business needs.
  • Serve as a subject matter expert in residential underwriting, maintaining deep knowledge of Agency, FHA, VA, Jumbo, and investor-specific overlays.
  • Utilize both manual and automated underwriting systems to determine appropriate conditions and loan decisions in accordance with investor guidelines.
  • Approve loans within delegated lending authority, review and sign off on secondary market loan denials, and escalate loans above authority as needed.
  • Review, trend, and remediate quality control findings, post-close purchase delays, and repurchase demands.
  • Drive operational initiatives, benchmarks, and performance metrics to improve quality, efficiency, and consistency across the underwriting team.
  • Identify and lead process improvement efforts in partnership with cross-functional leaders to optimize the origination experience.
  • Support the development, documentation, and refinement of underwriting processes and technology enhancements.
  • Assist with training and knowledge-sharing initiatives within underwriting and across partner departments.
  • Operate effectively within an automated underwriting environment and an Encompass-based lender platform.
