About The Position

The Underwriting Manager leads and manages a team of underwriters focused on large commercial accounts. The role ensures underwriting aligns with the company’s risk appetite, profitability goals, and regulatory requirements. The manager reviews and approves complex risks, guides account assessments, and fosters client relationships, balancing risk management with business development. The role oversees underwriting for large, complex commercial accounts; evaluates high-value and high-risk accounts; and guides coverage terms, conditions, and pricing. It also works with claims, actuarial, and risk management stakeholders to review accounts and monitor performance. The manager builds relationships with brokers, agents, and clients, handles escalations, supports new business acquisition, monitors industry and regulatory developments, contributes to underwriting policies and strategy, and works with senior management to address portfolio risk exposure. The position supervises direct reports and promotes employee engagement, professional growth, and alignment with company objectives. It includes setting SMART goals, coaching and feedback, addressing challenges, completing annual reviews, and holding review meetings.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in business, finance, risk management, or a related field.
At least 7 years of commercial underwriting experience, preferably in large accounts or a similar role.
At least 3 years of supervisory or management experience in an underwriting environment.
A valid Hawaii driver’s license and use of a personal vehicle are required; a favorable driving record is a condition of business-related driving privileges.
An equivalent combination of education and job-related experience will be considered.

Responsibilities

Lead, mentor, and develop a team of underwriters specializing in large commercial accounts.
Promote team performance through training, performance evaluations, and goal-setting.
Foster a positive, collaborative work environment and support continuous learning and professional growth.
Oversee underwriting of large, complex commercial accounts in accordance with company guidelines and regulatory standards.
Evaluate, approve, or decline high-value and high-risk accounts based on risk assessment, pricing strategies, and market conditions.
Guide coverage terms, conditions, and pricing to support profitability and competitive offerings.
Collaborate with claims, actuarial, and risk management stakeholders to review accounts and monitor performance.
Build and maintain relationships with brokers, agents, and clients to support satisfaction and retention of large accounts.
Serve as an escalation point for complex accounts and address client needs and concerns.
Participate in business development initiatives and support acquisition of new large accounts.
Monitor industry trends, market conditions, and regulatory changes and adjust underwriting strategies accordingly.
Contribute to underwriting policies and strategies aligned with corporate goals.
Work with senior management to assess portfolio risk exposure and adjust strategies to mitigate potential losses.
Model company values, lead by example, remain open to feedback, and ensure direct reports align with company and division objectives.
Encourage personal and professional growth, conduct regular coaching discussions, and provide timely positive and corrective feedback.
Address challenges proactively, document issues, and seek guidance from leadership or Human Resources when appropriate.
Complete the Holomua Annual Review process by established deadlines, including setting annual SMART goals, holding periodic progress discussions, assessing direct reports, and communicating review results.
