About The Position

This role provides high-level support to CNA’s Commercial Mid-Market department. The internship offers a chance to gain hands-on experience, develop risk analysis skills, and grow within a supportive team culture. Objectives include assisting the underwriting team in analyzing, pricing, and transferring commercial enterprises’ risks, with a focus on Commercial Property and Casualty, and assessing process effectiveness. The intern will gain real-world underwriting exposure through shadowing, learn about risk assessment and decision-making, observe broker interactions, and understand file handling and underwriting workflows. Responsibilities also include analyzing a business portfolio, gathering data, conducting market research, summarizing insights, evaluating new business opportunities, and tracking findings in Salesforce.

Requirements

  • Current Bachelor's Degree Student or Students enrolled in a full-time Insurance-focused Accredited Diploma with strong academic performance and a passion for learning
  • Proven track record with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and time management skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to conceptualize details and develop action plans for decision-making
  • Strong ability to work independently and within a team environment with limited supervision
  • Personal integrity, initiative, and leadership qualities

Responsibilities

  • Assist the underwriting team in rapidly analyzing, pricing and transferring commercial enterprises’ risks with a focus on Commercial Property and Casualty
  • Assess effectiveness and continually improve process throughout the program
  • Gain real-world underwriting exposure through shadowing opportunities
  • Learn how underwriters assess risk and make decisions
  • Observe broker interactions and client relationship management
  • Develop an understanding of file handling and end-to-end underwriting workflows
  • Analyze a real portfolio of business by reviewing recently written accounts and helping identify trends and insights that support ongoing projects
  • Gather and document key data points, including referral triggers and emerging patterns
  • Support internal initiatives by organizing findings and highlighting opportunities for improvement
  • Conduct competitive market research by reviewing competitor policy wordings and helping our team stay informed
  • Compare coverage features, limits, and enhancements against our products
  • Build clear “pros and cons” comparisons to highlight strengths and gaps
  • Summarize insights to support product development and strategy discussions
  • Evaluate new business opportunities by reviewing prior-year declined and lost submissions
  • Identify accounts that may now fit within our underwriting appetite
  • Help prioritize opportunities for potential re-engagement
  • Track and document findings in Salesforce, contributing to future pipeline growth
