About The Position

The Underwriting Consultant plays an important role in supporting financial analysis and underwriting for large group commercial customers, across both Fully Insured and Self Insured business. In this position, you will apply underwriting guidelines and analytical skills to develop pricing recommendations, assess risk, and project future costs for new business and renewal accounts. This role partners closely with Medica Sales to provide clear pricing rationale and support renewal and sales strategies that balance customer needs with Medica’s financial objectives. The Underwriting Consultant is expected to exercise sound judgment, contribute to pricing discussions, and continue building expertise in a competitive market.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 4+ years of professional experience in health insurance underwriting or a related field.
  • Experience within the healthcare insurance industry preferred.
  • Experience supporting large group commercial underwriting.
  • Experience using claims and experience reporting to assess risk and project future costs.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to translate data into clear insights.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with both Fully Insured and Self Insured large group business; Self Insured experience is a plus.
  • Experience supporting RFPs or large case underwriting.
  • Working knowledge of self-funded concepts, stop loss, and funding arrangements.
  • Experience working with claims data and experience reporting tools.

Responsibilities

  • Support underwriting activities for assigned large group commercial opportunities across Fully Insured and Self Insured products, including new business and renewals.
  • Perform financial analysis using group census data, claims experience, and reporting to project future claim costs.
  • Contribute to underwriting support for RFPs, including large and complex cases.
  • Develop and evaluate pricing recommendations aligned with underwriting guidelines and risk considerations.
  • Collaborate with Sales and Account Management to support renewal strategy development and customer discussions.
  • Assist in communicating underwriting rationale, risks, and recommendations to internal stakeholders.
  • Apply sound business judgment in evaluating risk, with support from senior team members as needed.
  • Build knowledge of large group underwriting, including Self Insured funding arrangements and plan design considerations.
  • Maintain awareness of market trends and industry developments impacting underwriting decisions.
