About The Position

The Underwriting Consultant will experience front line exposure, interdependence with a strong team of professionals, and opportunities both to learn from seasoned Underwriters and to mentor more junior staff. The main accountability will be managing underwriting risk which will drive profitable long-term financial results. Reporting to the Director, Corporate Accounts Underwriting, you will be directly responsible for managing risk, profitability and persistency on a specific block of Group Benefits clients, helping the organization to achieve or exceed our targets. You will also assist with onboarding of new clients working directly with them and their advisors to help create a strong first impression of Manulife.

Requirements

  • Post Secondary education with an exceptional business, mathematical and analytical aptitude.
  • Deep understanding of the Group Insurance market, products and services.
  • Professional risk management expertise with demonstrated work related Underwriting experience within Group Benefits.
  • Proven ability to effectively partner with and support sales teams.
  • Excellent Microsoft Office skills with exceptional proficiency in Excel (data manipulation such as pivot tables) and Word.
  • Ability to make well-balanced decisions that take effective risk management, financial discipline and customer needs into account.
  • Strong business acumen with ability to communicate complex financial concepts, analyses and results in a clear, concise, easy to understand manner (written and verbal) including the ability to interact with Senior Management, representatives from other Divisions and external customers.
  • Strategic and creative thinker focused on finding solutions to unique customer needs.
  • Confident and expert negotiator with proven ability to build relationships and influence decision making.
  • Persuasive communicator with an ability to clearly articulate ideas and present information within various levels of the organization.
  • Motivated self-starter and able to work independently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to produce quality materials within tight timeframes and simultaneously manage multiple priorities.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingualism, French and English, is an asset
  • CEBS, GBA certification is encouraged and recommended.

Responsibilities

  • Establish rates and retentions for new and existing Group Benefit plans ensuring that the appropriate target profitability levels are achieved.
  • Provide internal account management to proactively manage and/or respond to client requests relating to pricing and benefit changes.
  • Demonstrate a keen understanding of liability associated with various group benefits arrangements.
  • Prepare quotation submissions, including responses to questionnaires.
  • Onboard new clients – develop complex client structures and applications.
  • Work with internal partners to ensure administrative and plan design features can be managed.
  • Improve operating performance that results in long term financial success.
  • Negotiate contracts - financial arrangements, benefit plan provisions, service and performance standard agreements.
