Underwriting Analyst, New Business Underwriting

ExtensisHR, NJ
$75,000 - $90,000Hybrid

About The Position

ExtensisHR, a large Professional Employer Organization (PEO), is seeking a talented Underwriting Analyst to join their New Business Underwriting team. This role is crucial for maintaining pricing accuracy, monitoring performance, and testing system changes within the underwriting model. The position sits at the intersection of underwriting and data, requiring daily use of PRISM, Salesforce, and real-time reporting tools to review outputs, track exceptions, and identify discrepancies. While deep underwriting experience is not required initially, familiarity with ExtensisHR's systems and data is highly valued, with underwriting judgment developed on the job. This is an ideal opportunity for internal candidates familiar with PRISM and Salesforce or finance/operations professionals interested in benefits and financial data.

Requirements

  • Existing familiarity with ExtensisHR's PRISM and/or Salesforce environment is a significant advantage.
  • 1-3 years of experience in underwriting, benefits administration, financial analysis, or operations.
  • Interest in or working knowledge of group health insurance plan designs and medical plan setup – or a demonstrated ability to learn how a plan is built quickly.
  • Comfort working with data: you can navigate a dashboard, spot an outlier, and know when a number doesn't look right.
  • Strong Excel skills are required.
  • Excellent attention to detail – this role exists to catch what would otherwise slip through.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain a discrepancy or a recommendation clearly to both underwriting and non-underwriting audiences.
  • A genuine interest in how underwriting decisions get made, with the aptitude to grow into more independent case review and analytics work over time.
  • Bachelor's degree preferred, or equivalent experience in benefits, underwriting, financial operations, or a related field.

Nice To Haves

  • Internal candidates from finance, operations, or benefits who already navigate these systems are strongly encouraged to apply, even without direct underwriting experience.
  • Group health, PEO, or carrier experience is a plus but not required for the right internal fit.

Responsibilities

  • Support the Senior Manager, Underwriting in day-to-day case review – checking rating outputs, retier requests, and plan setups for accuracy against underwriting guidelines and carrier rules.
  • Monitor the team's real-time KPI dashboards – concession volume, pipeline activation, retier approval rates, and exception trends – and flag items that need senior attention.
  • Test rating and pricing updates in PRISM and Salesforce as the team rolls out new business rules, rate books, and formula changes, confirming outputs match expected results before go-live.
  • Assist with parity and QA review of underwriting decisions submitted by our outsourced underwriting vendor (OIP), identifying discrepancies and escalating unresolved issues.
  • Maintain and update underwriting reference materials and SOP documentation as processes evolve.
  • Partner with the Senior Manager, Underwriting on the ongoing build of underwriting analytics tools, including the UW Workbench and related reporting, providing subject-matter input from a day-to-day case perspective.
  • Provide regular reporting and analysis on new business underwriting activity, including trend tracking and ad hoc requests from Benefits Management leadership.
  • Support medical plan setup and configuration work across carriers (Aetna, Anthem, Kaiser) as new business and renewal cycles require.
  • Performs additional responsibilities as assigned to support the efficient operation of the department and the organization.
  • Effective use and understanding of artificial intelligence (AI) tools and technologies to enhance productivity, decision-making, and overall performance.
  • Maintain awareness of emerging AI applications relevant to their responsibilities, apply AI tools ethically and effectively, and continuously develop their AI proficiency.
