About The Position

AIG is seeking a motivated Underwriter to contribute to our AIG Risk Management (AIGRM) team. AIG’s strong brand in the market has allowed for excellent client retention and relationships, along with our desire for strong growth and thus the need for underwriting resources. Our underwriters constantly deliver in an ever-changing marketplace and world. Areas of focus will be around our core coverages, General Liability, Auto Liability, and Workers Compensation. In this role, you will be responsible for underwriting and servicing an existing renewal book along with assistance to other team members. This role includes constant interaction with our brokerage community, ensuring our renewals are being serviced properly and out soliciting new business opportunities. Underwriters gain experience in a wide variety of coverages, client industries and specializations.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of Commercial Insurance Company, Agency or Brokerage experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree from a four-year college or university.
  • Proven ability to build and maintain strong professional relationships.
  • Working knowledge of US Casualty lines of business (Workers’ Compensation, Auto Liability, and General Liability) including product features, forms, regulatory environments and risks etc.
  • Demonstrated sales, marketing, and relationship building experience.
  • Very strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly motivated and results-oriented.
  • Ability to work in dynamic, rapidly changing environment, adapting to changing requirements and collaborating with a wide range of colleagues to quickly deliver solutions.
  • Willingness to be flexible, learn on the job, and maintain a can-do attitude.
  • Comfort with analytical tools and technology.

Responsibilities

  • Analyzes and evaluates risk and accepts, rejects, or modifies risk and coverage conditions within limits of delegated authority and in accordance with established underwriting guidelines to achieve underwriting profitability objectives.
  • Underwrites complex standard and non-standard products, new and renewals.
  • Determines how pricing should be modified based on loss experience and is able to evaluate complex exposures.
  • Underwrites the Workers’ Compensation, General Liability and Auto Liability primary Casualty product lines.
  • Communicates risk appetite and AIGRM Value Proposition to brokers.
  • Evaluates risk and gives approval or declination for quotes.
  • Reviews new distribution opportunities, identifies new business relationships, manages pipeline of opportunities and collaborates with region to ensure new opportunities are explored and pursued.
  • Reviews the more difficult accounts and ensures that they are issued accurately and in a timely fashion.
  • Assists in the training and development of Associate Underwriters and Underwriting Analysts while providing mentorship.
  • Explains the rationale behind the underwriting decisions made on an account.
  • Generates new business and provides underwriting guidance and appropriate rates for alternate plans at time of renewal.
  • Makes independent sales calls to market and cross-market products.
  • Refers declined business to other AIG divisions, as appropriate.
  • Identifies cross-selling opportunities.
  • Travels to broker/client meetings to serve as the AIGRM product expert and to identify cross selling opportunities.
  • Performs special requests for clients, which may include task such as business plan changes, or analyzing new agreements.
