About The Position

This is a development-oriented role for a motivated professional looking to grow with a new but highly-experienced underwriting team. Engages in a hands-on training program that provides knowledge and exposure to the fundamental theories, principles and concepts of insurance, underwriting, and renewable energy. Develops skills that contribute to technical support, underwriting and risk evaluation, and service to assigned producers on accounts. Includes assignments of low-to-moderate complexity such as gathering key account details, setting up underwriting models, and authorizing renewals and endorsements under close supervision and in conjunction with experienced underwriters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required, with an emphasis in business, insurance, engineering, or renewable energy.
  • 0-2 years of experience in insurance, engineering, or a renewable energy-related field.

Responsibilities

  • Assists in the functions of the underwriting department. Observes, questions and develops an understanding of the operations within the department as well as within the company in order to learn the principles of insurance and underwriting.
  • Assists in the workflow process by gathering and organizing key account details, setting up underwriting tools and models, and liaising with risk control and cat modeling teams with, and under the guidance of, more senior underwriters. Processes routine endorsements on accounts while developing knowledge of the coverage therein.
  • Develops an increasing understanding of the renewable energy industry, technical risk evaluation, Catastrophe assessment and modeling, key terms and conditions, and policy language.
  • Position will evolve to include additional responsibilities such as: directly servicing a book of business under close direction within defined authority limits, documenting underwriting files, and working with producers to develop all necessary account information for risk evaluation.
  • Assists producers with basic questions on products and coverage.
  • Begins to develop agency relationships. Travels with underwriters on agency visits to observe selling and marketing techniques.
  • Performs basic portfolio analysis and makes recommendations to underwriters.
