About The Position

Xtreme Sonar is seeking an undersea acoustics engineer to join our advanced underwater systems team. This role is focused on designing, implementing, and deploying cutting-edge sonar and underwater communication solutions in real-world environments. The ideal candidate combines deep domain expertise in acoustics with hands-on hardware and software development experience, and a track record of delivering production-ready systems. Preference is given to candidates with an electrical engineering background and related skill sets.

Requirements

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience in acoustics with underwater systems, sonar, hydrophones, or related technologies.
  • Strong background in underwater acoustics concepts: propagation, array theory, sonar equation, and acoustic communication systems.
  • Demonstrated track record of building and deploying working systems in real conditions, not just theoretical models.
  • Proficiency with MATLAB for analysis, modeling, and data-driven decision making.
  • Experience building the hardware/software stack for acoustic systems, including: Analog front-end design and signal conditioning, Timing, synchronization, and embedded compute constraints, Interfaces such as Ethernet, serial, CAN, PPS, Transducer selection and design tradeoffs, Firmware, drivers, and logging/observability
  • Experience scaling products to production: cost-down iterations, DFM/DFT, supplier engagement, manufacturing documentation, calibration procedures, automated test fixtures, and yield improvements.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.
  • Eligibility to qualify for US security clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Electrical engineering background preferred, with emphasis on electrical design, signal processing, and systems integration; familiarity with electrical CAD tools, power management, and RF/analog design is a plus.
  • Strong fundamentals in design for manufacturing (DFM)
  • Proficiency creating BOMs
  • Familiarity with impedance matching and waterproofing methods

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of underwater acoustic systems, including sonar, hydrophones, transducers, and acoustic communication components.
  • Apply and extend sonar theory (propagation, array processing, the sonar equation) to real-world deployments and field trials.
  • Build and optimize end-to-end hardware/software stacks
  • Conduct system integration, testing, and field deployments in real conditions; demonstrate a track record of turning models into working, reliable systems.
  • Drive scale-to-production activities: cost-down iterations, design for manufacturability (DFM/DFT), supplier selection, manufacturing documentation, calibration procedures, and automated test fixtures.
  • Improve yield, reliability, and maintainability through robust engineering practices and documentation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including electrical, mechanical, software, and operations to deliver integrated solutions.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive medical, dental and vision insurance
  • Generous PTO
  • Equity incentive program with significant growth potential
  • 401(k) match
