About The Position

The Underground Mine Engineer provides technical and planning support for underground mine development and production activities at Apex. This role prepares Mine designs, schedules, production plans, and engineering analyses while monitoring execution and responding to changing underground conditions. Working closely with Mine Operations, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Maintenance, Projects, Survey, and Health and Safety, the Underground Mine Engineer helps ensure that mine plans are safe, practical, and aligned with production objectives. The role combines office-based engineering with regular underground field involvement.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering or a related engineering discipline
  • Minimum 3 years’ underground mine-engineering experience.
  • Experience with underground mine planning, design, scheduling, and operational support.
  • Familiarity with underground development, production drilling and blasting, ground support, ventilation, and mine infrastructure.
  • Experience interpreting geological, survey, and geotechnical information.
  • Experience using mine-planning and design software.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to meet all site-access and underground-work requirements.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer licensure in the applicable state, or eligibility to obtain the appropriate designation, is preferred

Responsibilities

  • Develop short- and medium-range underground mine plans, designs, schedules, and production forecasts.
  • Prepare development layouts, access designs, production sequences, and related underground infrastructure plans.
  • Incorporate geological, geotechnical, ventilation, equipment, and operational requirements into mine designs.
  • Waste rock planning and backfill management
  • Provide daily technical support to underground Operations and assist with the execution of approved mine plans.
  • Monitor development and production performance against plan and investigate schedule, productivity, and cost variances.
  • Conduct regular underground inspections to verify conditions, progress, and alignment with engineering designs.
  • Support the preparation and optimization of development and production drilling and blasting designs.
  • Coordinate with Geotechnical Engineering and Operations regarding ground-support requirements and changing ground conditions.
  • Review blast results, excavation performance, overbreak, dilution, and other operating outcomes to identify improvements.
  • Complete engineering analyses involving development rates, production capacity, equipment requirements, material movement, and mine infrastructure.
  • Maintain accurate mine-planning records, production data, drawings, schedules, and technical reports.
  • Support reconciliation between planned and actual development, production, tonnage, grade, and costs.
  • Incorporate health, safety, environmental, geotechnical, ventilation, and regulatory requirements into mine plans and designs.
  • Participate in risk assessments, workplace inspections, design reviews, incident investigations, and change-management processes.
  • Identify and communicate underground hazards, planning constraints, and conditions requiring corrective action.
  • Coordinate mine-planning requirements with Operations, Geology, Geotechnical Engineering, Survey, Maintenance, Projects, and Health and Safety.
  • Communicate plans, priorities, technical requirements, and schedule changes to affected stakeholders, ensuring where required collaboration and communication with the corporate mining team.
  • Identify opportunities to improve safety, productivity, development performance, resource recovery, and operating efficiency.
