About The Position

The Underground Electrician aims to repair and maintain associated surface fixed equipment and underground infrastructure equipment. This role involves installing, maintaining, inspecting, and repairing underground electrical systems, troubleshooting electrical faults on fixed plant and mobile mining equipment, and performing preventative maintenance to minimize downtime. The electrician will also be responsible for installing and maintaining substations, switchgear, transformers, VFDs, and motor control systems, while adhering to strict safety protocols and working closely with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams.

Requirements

• On-the-job experience and vocational training
• Must adhere to the OceanaGold Code of Conduct
• Journeyman Electrician certification or equivalent trade qualification
• Minimum 10 years of experience as an electrician, preferably in underground mining or heavy industrial environments
• Strong knowledge of underground mining electrical systems and regulations
• Experience with medium-voltage systems, PLCs, VFDs, and mining mobile equipment preferred
• Ability to work in confined spaces and physically demanding underground conditions
• Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
• Electrical diagnostics and fault finding
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team
• Strong communication and documentation skills
• Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
• Commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement
• Ability to work in both office and operational mining environments.
• Ability to regularly access active mining and processing areas to support operational teams, conduct site visits, investigations, coaching, and workforce engagement activities.
• Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb stairs and access elevated work areas as required.
• Ability to wear and use mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE).

Responsibilities

• Install, maintain, inspect, and repair underground electrical systems including power distribution, lighting, communication, and control systems
• Troubleshoot electrical faults on fixed plant and mobile mining equipment
• Perform preventative maintenance and inspections to minimize downtime and improve reliability
• Read and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and manuals
• Install and maintain substations, switchgear, transformers, VFDs, and motor control systems
• Safely work on low, medium, and high-voltage systems in accordance with site procedures and legislation
• Conduct lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding, and testing procedures
• Identify electrical hazards and participate in risk assessments and job hazard analyses (JHAs)
• Accurately complete work orders, inspection reports, and maintenance records
• Respond to breakdowns and emergency repairs as required
• Follow all MSHA/OSHA regulations, site safety policies, and electrical codes
• Maintain a strong focus on personal safety, coworker safety, and equipment protection
• Work closely with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to support production goals
• Participate in safety meetings, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives
