About The Position

The Underground Electrician aims to repair and maintain associated surface fixed equipment and underground infrastructure equipment. This role involves daily tasks such as installing, maintaining, inspecting, and repairing underground electrical systems including power distribution, lighting, communication, and control systems. The electrician will troubleshoot electrical faults on fixed plant and mobile mining equipment, perform preventative maintenance and inspections to minimize downtime and improve reliability, and read and interpret electrical schematics, drawings, and manuals. Installation and maintenance of substations, switchgear, transformers, VFDs, and motor control systems are also key responsibilities. The role requires safely working on low, medium, and high-voltage systems in accordance with site procedures and legislation, conducting lockout/tagout (LOTO), grounding, and testing procedures, and identifying electrical hazards. Participation in risk assessments and job hazard analyses (JHAs) is expected, along with accurately completing work orders, inspection reports, and maintenance records. Responding to breakdowns and emergency repairs, following all MSHA/OSHA regulations, site safety policies, and electrical codes, and maintaining a strong focus on personal safety, coworker safety, and equipment protection are crucial. The position also involves working closely with maintenance, operations, and engineering teams to support production goals and participating in safety meetings, audits, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Requirements

On-the-job experience and vocational training
Must adhere to the OceanaGold Code of Conduct
Journeyman Electrician certification or equivalent trade qualification
Minimum 10 years of experience as an electrician, preferably in underground mining or heavy industrial environments
Strong knowledge of underground mining electrical systems and regulations
Experience with medium-voltage systems, PLCs, VFDs, and mining mobile equipment preferred
Ability to work in confined spaces and physically demanding underground conditions
Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
Electrical diagnostics and fault finding
Ability to work independently and as part of a team
Strong communication and documentation skills
Mechanical aptitude and attention to detail
Commitment to safety, reliability, and continuous improvement
Ability to work in both office and operational mining environments
Ability to regularly access active mining and processing areas to support operational teams, conduct site visits, investigations, coaching, and workforce engagement activities
Ability to walk on uneven terrain, climb stairs and access elevated work areas as required
Ability to wear and use mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE)
