About The Position

The Visual Communications Student Assistant will work with the Science Translator and Communications Specialist to assist in the design of visual communications that highlight the research and scholarly programs of the South Central CASC. The South Central CASC is a science organization that works with decision makers across the south-central US, providing learning opportunities, technical assistance, science translation, data and tools, and other information to help build more resilient ecosystems and communities. The selected student will join an interdisciplinary team dedicated to supporting the use of climate information in adaptation planning and whose vision is to develop an exciting social media presence.

Requirements

Must be currently enrolled in the Fall 2026 Term as an undergraduate student at the University of Oklahoma.
Familiarity with Mac or Windows computer operating systems
Familiarity with Microsoft 365 Suite (or Mac/Google equivalents)
Experience working with multiple social media platforms in a professional or organizational setting
Familiarity with graphic design using Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar tools
Strong communication and writing/editing skills
Ability to write in a scientific and creative manner to optimize content
Highly organized and able to handle multiple tasks and deadlines
Ability to lift/carry 35 pounds to help with event tabling
Must be able to stand for extended periods of time during outreach events
Must possess the visual acuity and color vision necessary to accurately distinguish complex color coding, palettes, and gradients

Nice To Haves

Interest in and/or familiarity with climate/weather or environmental sciences and science communications
Interest in or familiarity with video editing software such as Adobe Creative Suite or similar tools
Familiarity using MailChimp or similar tools
Ability to work independently
A willingness to learn and apply best practices in communications across different media types

Responsibilities

Coordinate with faculty and staff across the South Central CASC Consortium to gather visual and written content for CASC outreach materials and reporting
Creatively display South Central CASC research and programmatic content through digital and print media such as videos, web highlights, social media, factsheets, etc.
Assist with writing messaging for print and digital publication for marketing materials, website content, news and feature articles, blog/social media posts, press releases, etc.
Take photos and videos at South Central CASC events that can be used for promotional materials
Plan and execute short video shoots to spotlight important features of the CASC programs
Strategically plan social media posts on all platforms to maintain and grow our online audiences
Assist with outreach events
Ensure all published content follows OU and CASC branding guidelines and uses clear messaging
Use ADA compliance standards on all communications
Assist with day-to-day office communications tasks and other tasks as needed
