About The Position
The Undergraduate Academic Advisor 2 position provides academic advising and support to students within a designated group of undergraduate majors at The Ohio State University Newark campus. This role plays a key part in promoting student success through proactive advising practices, helping students make informed decisions and stay on track toward degree completion. The advisor offers individualized academic advising, assists with course planning and selection based on academic progress, personal interests, and career goals, and helps students understand and navigate university policies, degree requirements, academic procedures, and institutional expectations. Additionally, the advisor connects students with various campus resources for academic achievement and overall well-being, such as tutoring, career development, financial assistance, and mental health services. The position operates with a moderate level of independence, completing structured assignments and contributing to projects of varying complexity. It applies advanced advising concepts, established practices, and technical knowledge to support student needs and departmental objectives. Communication involves routine and standard matters, with collaboration with colleagues and guidance from senior staff. Success requires a strong understanding of academic advising principles, student development theory, and higher education practices. Responsibilities also include supporting new student orientation, facilitating lessons in a student survey course, participating in professional development, and potentially evaluating and grading student assignments.
Requirements
- Master's degree or 2+ years of equivalent experience (Master’s required for teaching).

- Strong interpersonal skills, including active listening, effective interviewing, and thoughtful questioning techniques.

Responsibilities
- Provide and document individualized academic advising for undergraduate students regarding degree and program options, academic standards, General Education requirements, prerequisite coursework, and major-specific requirements.
- Consult with or escalate complex student issues to senior advising staff as appropriate.
- Assist students in navigating university processes and connect them with campus resources that support academic success, career development, financial well-being, and mental health.
- Advise students experiencing academic difficulty, including those on academic probation.
- Review and process academic transactions, including course adds/drops, withdrawals, and program changes.
- Assist with the preparation of orientation materials and resources for new student orientation programs.
- Present information to students, parents, and family members during orientation sessions as needed.
- Participate in and occasionally lead special projects that support departmental and campus objectives.
- Identify opportunities for process improvements or new initiatives and provide recommendations to management.
- Engage in ongoing professional development and participate in unit- and university-wide training and development opportunities.
- Contribute input to the Newark campus course schedule to help ensure that course offerings meet student degree and program requirements.
- Teach lessons in the university survey course and may independently instruct specialized course sections.
- Use established curriculum and instructional materials, making only minor modifications as needed to effectively deliver content.
- Attend required training sessions, grade student assignments as assigned, and assist with the review and updating of course materials.
