UI/UX Design Intern, Internal Platforms

ZooxFoster City, CA
Onsite

About The Position

Zoox is transforming mobility with fully autonomous, electric vehicles designed from the ground up for a driverless future. Our mission is to make transportation safer, more sustainable, and accessible to everyone. At Zoox, innovation, collaboration, and a bold vision for the future drive everything we do. Zoox’s internship program offers hands-on experience with cutting-edge technology, mentorship from some of the industry’s brightest minds, and the opportunity to make meaningful contributions to real projects. We seek interns who demonstrate strong academic performance, engagement beyond the classroom, intellectual curiosity, and a genuine interest in Zoox’s mission. We are looking for a sharp, design-driven intern to reimagine the user experience of our internal platform — the system our employees rely on every day. This is not a peripheral project. The work will ship, be measured, and directly impact how hundreds of internal users get their jobs done. You will own design problems end-to-end: research, wireframes, high-fidelity mockups, prototypes, and shipped UI. If you believe great internal tools deserve the same craft as consumer products, this role is for you.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in Design, HCI, Computer Science, or a related field — or a self-taught designer with a strong portfolio
  • Good academic standing
  • Able to commit to a 12-week internship during the following summer 2026 cohort: June 15th - September 4th
  • Ability to relocate to the Bay Area, CA for the duration of the internship
  • Interns at Zoox may not use any proprietary information they are working on as part of their thesis, any published work with their university, or to be distributed to anyone outside of Zoox

Nice To Haves

  • A portfolio that demonstrates a clear point of view: modern, minimalistic, and grounded in usability principles
  • Fluency in Figma; comfort building components, variants, and auto-layout systems
  • Solid understanding of UI fundamentals: typography, spacing, color theory, contrast, accessibility (WCAG basics), and responsive design
  • Familiarity with design systems (Material, Apple HIG, Polaris, or similar) and when to follow versus deviate from them
  • Strong communication skills — able to explain design decisions with reasoning, not just aesthetics
  • Self-directed and outcome-oriented. You can scope your own work in a 12-week window and ship
  • Experience designing for B2B, enterprise, or internal tooling
  • Working knowledge of HTML/CSS or front-end frameworks (React, Tailwind) — enough to prototype or pair with engineers
  • Exposure to motion design, micro-interactions, or design tokens

Responsibilities

  • Audit the existing internal platform and identify friction points, inconsistencies, and opportunities for measurable improvement.
  • Design clean, modern, minimalistic interfaces that prioritize clarity, hierarchy, and speed of use.
  • Systematize. Build and contribute to a reusable component library and design system to ensure consistency across the platform.
  • Partner with engineering, product, and end-users to validate ideas through interviews, usability tests, and rapid iteration.
  • Translate complex internal workflows into simple, intuitive UI patterns that follow industry best practices.
  • Define and track UX metrics (task completion time, error rate, satisfaction) to demonstrate the impact of your work.

Benefits

  • medical insurance
  • housing stipend
  • relocation assistance
