About The Position

Under administrative direction, the Head Coach is responsible for planning, administering, and evaluating the overall operation of the NCAA Division I Sailing Program. This includes academic achievement of student-athletes, coaching, recruitment of qualified prospects, hiring and supervision of assistant coaches and other staff, compliance, program management (eligibility, scheduling, travel, budget, equipment), and student-athlete welfare. The coach is responsible for ensuring team performance is competitive in the affiliated conference with the goal of achieving post-season competition and promoting the institutional position on intercollegiate issues. The role involves organizing, conducting, directing, and evaluating practices and competitions, teaching necessary skills, and directing conditioning and training to ensure student-athlete safety and preparation. A strategic recruiting program is to be developed and implemented, with active efforts to recruit a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process. Collaboration with Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Student-Athlete Academic Services Offices is expected. The coach will oversee academic progress and success, promoting an environment that encourages academic achievement and the overall well-being of student-athletes. A positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship are to be fostered. Budget recommendations and administration, oversight of equipment, and functional/administrative supervision of assistant coaches and support staff are key responsibilities. The coach will prepare reports, recommend future requirements, arrange competition schedules, coordinate travel, and organize sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps. Fundraising, promotional activities, speaking engagements, and alumni events are also part of the role, as are public relations activities. Building and managing name, image, and likeness (NIL) initiatives for sailing student-athletes in collaboration with UHMAD is required. The head coach is responsible for the actions of all reporting staff, promoting an atmosphere of compliance, and monitoring their activities. Duties of a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act are included. Confidentiality must be maintained in accordance with laws and University policies. Collaborative working relationships with various stakeholders are essential. Compliance with all governing laws, policies, rules, and regulations is mandatory, with immediate reporting of any suspected violations.

Requirements

  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree.
  • Three (3) years of experience coaching sailing at the college or university level; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience.
  • Knowledge and ability to organize, implement and develop a successful sailing program as played at the Division I collegiate level.
  • Demonstrated ability to recruit academically and athletically prepared Division I student-athletes.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish, foster, and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Ability to travel and work evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Ability to lead/supervise/evaluate assistant coaches/staff.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.
  • Required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification within 45 days of employment start date.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Computer, cell phone, social media and sailing related software technology competency.

Responsibilities

  • Teaching necessary skills from basic fundamentals to modern techniques and strategies of team play.
  • Directing the conditioning, training, and ensuring the safety of student-athletes.
  • Developing and implementing a strategic recruiting program.
  • Actively seeking and encouraging a diverse group of prospects and assisting them through the application process.
  • Working collaboratively with Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Student-Athlete Academic Services Offices.
  • Making recurring contacts by phone, written correspondence, off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordination of campus visits.
  • Overseeing the academic progress and success of student-athletes.
  • Promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement.
  • Promoting and maintaining an environment where the physical, mental, social, and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority.
  • Preventing influences that may interfere with student-athletes' scholastic, athletic, or related interests.
  • Promoting and fostering a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship.
  • Being responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the water.
  • Recommending budget and administering approved allocation.
  • Overseeing the selection, purchase, fitting, and upkeep of team equipment in collaboration with the assigned equipment manager.
  • Exercising functional and administrative supervision for any assigned assistant coaches and other support staff.
  • Preparing data and reports as necessary in support of University requirements.
  • Recommending future competition schedule, personnel, financial and facilities requirements for Sailing to the Athletics Director or designee.
  • Arranging a competitive competition schedule as approved and coordinating travel arrangements.
  • Organizing and participating in sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps as approved.
  • Conferring with the Athletics Director or designee on personnel, financial and facilities requirements for the sports program.
  • Actively cultivating and participating in fundraising, sports promotional activities, speaking engagements, and alumni events.
  • Participating in public relations activities that strengthen the relationship between the University and the Community.
  • Building, developing and/or managing name, image, and likeness (NIL) initiatives in collaboration with UHMAD that benefits sailing student-athletes.
  • Promoting an atmosphere of compliance within the program and monitoring the activities of all institutional staff members involved with the program.
  • Performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  • Maintaining confidentiality in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
  • Maintaining collaborative working relationships with administrators, staff, coaches, and external stakeholders.
  • Knowing, recognizing, and complying with all governing laws, policies, rules, and regulations.
  • Immediately advising the Director of Athletics or designee if there is reasonable cause to believe violations have occurred or will occur.
  • Performing other duties as assigned.
