Under administrative direction, the Head Coach is responsible for planning, administering, and evaluating the overall operation of the NCAA Division I Sailing Program. This includes academic achievement of student-athletes, coaching, recruitment of qualified prospects, hiring and supervision of assistant coaches and other staff, compliance, program management (eligibility, scheduling, travel, budget, equipment), and student-athlete welfare. The coach is responsible for ensuring team performance is competitive in the affiliated conference with the goal of achieving post-season competition and promoting the institutional position on intercollegiate issues. The role involves organizing, conducting, directing, and evaluating practices and competitions, teaching necessary skills, and directing conditioning and training to ensure student-athlete safety and preparation. A strategic recruiting program is to be developed and implemented, with active efforts to recruit a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process. Collaboration with Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Student-Athlete Academic Services Offices is expected. The coach will oversee academic progress and success, promoting an environment that encourages academic achievement and the overall well-being of student-athletes. A positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship are to be fostered. Budget recommendations and administration, oversight of equipment, and functional/administrative supervision of assistant coaches and support staff are key responsibilities. The coach will prepare reports, recommend future requirements, arrange competition schedules, coordinate travel, and organize sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps. Fundraising, promotional activities, speaking engagements, and alumni events are also part of the role, as are public relations activities. Building and managing name, image, and likeness (NIL) initiatives for sailing student-athletes in collaboration with UHMAD is required. The head coach is responsible for the actions of all reporting staff, promoting an atmosphere of compliance, and monitoring their activities. Duties of a Campus Security Authority under the Clery Act are included. Confidentiality must be maintained in accordance with laws and University policies. Collaborative working relationships with various stakeholders are essential. Compliance with all governing laws, policies, rules, and regulations is mandatory, with immediate reporting of any suspected violations.
