About The Position

This position assists with all aspects of an NCAA Division I Baseball Program. Responsibilities include student recruitment and development, on-field coaching, contest scheduling, ensuring compliance with NCAA, Conference, and University of Hawaii rules and regulations, and supporting student-athlete academic achievement. The role involves assisting and participating in practices and intercollegiate competitions, teaching baseball skills from fundamentals to advanced strategies, and promoting a positive team environment with emphasis on appropriate behavior and sportsmanship. The coach is responsible for the conduct of team members on and off the field and must prioritize the physical, mental, social, and academic well-being of all student-athletes. This includes identifying, evaluating, recruiting, and selecting qualified prospects, actively seeking diverse candidates, and assisting them through the application process. Collaboration with Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Academics staff is crucial for prospect qualification and processing. Duties involve making contacts via telephone, writing correspondence, conducting off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordinating visits as assigned. The role also includes scouting opponents, analyzing game film, overseeing academic progress, analyzing statistical information, and participating in fundraising, promotional, and public relations activities. Additionally, the position requires performing duties as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act and participating in approved sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps. Maintaining collaborative relationships with administrators, coaches, other university offices, media, donors, and interested individuals is essential. Confidentiality regarding information, files, and records is mandatory, adhering to federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies. The incumbent must be knowledgeable of and comply with all governing laws, policies, rules, and regulations, and immediately report any suspected violations.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited four year college or university
  • One (1) year experience coaching baseball at the college or university level
  • Knowledge of baseball as competed at the collegiate level.
  • Strong oral and written communication and presentation skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Ability to work outside of normally scheduled work hours including day, night, weekend, and/or holiday hours as directed.
  • Ability to travel with the team as required.
  • Ability to work with all segments of the University of Hawaii community and the general public.
  • Ability to work cooperatively and effectively with people of diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to travel independently to various geographical locations in a timely manner.
  • Required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
  • First Aid, CPR and AED certification by the employment start date.
  • Computer, cell phone, and social media technology competency.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.

Responsibilities

  • Assists with all aspects of NCAA Division I Baseball Program, including student recruitment and development, on field coaching, contest scheduling, compliance with NCAA, Conference and University of Hawaii rules and regulations, student-athlete academic achievement, and other duties assigned by the Head Coach.
  • Assists and participates in practices and intercollegiate competitions.
  • Teaches necessary skills from the basic fundamentals to the techniques and strategies of team play.
  • Promotes and fosters a positive team environment, appropriate behavior, and sportsmanship by team members.
  • Responsible for the conduct of team members both on and off the field.
  • Promotes and maintains an environment where the physical, mental, social and academic well-being of all student-athletes are a priority.
  • Assists with identifying, evaluating, recruiting and selecting qualified prospects who have the ability to compete in the classroom and athletically.
  • Actively seek out and encourage a diverse group of prospects and assist them through the application process.
  • Works collaboratively with the Compliance, Student-Athlete Services, and Academics staff to qualify and process prospects in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Makes recurring contacts by telephone, writes correspondence, conducts off-campus visits and evaluations, and coordinates off campus visits as assigned by the Head Coach.
  • Assists in scouting of opponents including the exchange and analysis of film.
  • Assists with overseeing the academic progress and success of student-athletes including promoting and maintaining an environment that encourages academic achievement as measured by academic eligibility, retention, and graduation.
  • Assists the Head Coach in analyzing statistical information to further team success.
  • Actively participates in fundraising, promotional, and public relation activities for the sports program.
  • Responsible for performing the duties of a Campus Security Authority as defined by University policy and federal law with regards to the Clery Act.
  • Participates in sports clinics, exhibitions, and camps as approved.
  • Maintains collaborative working relationships with administrators and coaches in the department, other college offices, and appropriate relationships with members of the media, donors, and other individuals interested in the sports program.
  • Maintains confidentiality to include but not limited to information, files and records that the incumbent may obtain or possess, in accordance with federal and state laws and University of Hawaii policies.
  • Knows, recognizes, and complies with the laws, policies, rules, and regulations governing the University of Hawaii and its employees, and the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association and affiliated conferences as now constituted or as may be amended in the future.
  • Immediately advises the Director of Athletics or designee if there is reasonable cause to believe violations, whether by employees, students, or others, have occurred or will occur.
  • Performs other duties as required.
