About The Position

Tutors serve as learning facilitators for introductory physics courses. They are Learning Assistants, not teachers or teaching assistants, and help students solve problems independently rather than solving problems for them. Tutors staff the Physics Tutoring Center during posted help hours and receive a stipend of $12.00 per hour. Only hours worked in the Tutoring Center (Room 218 FH) are remunerated. Students holding this job may not take additional Duquesne University employment.

Requirements

• Ability to keep a rigid schedule.
• Knowledge of general physics at the college level.
• Math proficiency at the level of high school algebra.

Responsibilities

• Facilitate learning of challenging physics skills and concepts.
• Solve homework problems in advance to prepare to assist individual students in the learning process.
• Staff the Physics Tutoring Center during posted help hours.
• Promote a learning atmosphere in the Physics Tutoring Center.
• Assist with test administration and proctoring as needed in the physics department.
• Assist during recitations as needed.
