About The Position

The Tutor, College in the Community provides individualized and small-group academic support to adult learners enrolled in associate degree coursework through the College in the Community partnership. The Tutor assists students in developing the academic skills, confidence, and strategies necessary to succeed in college-level courses, with a primary focus on mathematics, English composition, writing, reading comprehension, study skills, and technology. The Tutor works collaboratively with program staff and faculty to promote student persistence, academic achievement, and successful degree completion.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated proficiency in college-level mathematics, English composition, and writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook) and common educational technology platforms.
  • Ability to work effectively with adult learners from diverse educational, cultural, and linguistic backgrounds.
  • Commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and encouraging learning environment.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with program staff and faculty.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous tutoring, teaching, academic coaching, or mentoring experience preferred.
  • Experience supporting adult learners or first-generation college students is highly desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Bilingual English/Spanish preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized and small-group tutoring to students enrolled in associate degree coursework.
  • Support students in mathematics, English composition, writing, reading comprehension, and other general education courses as needed.
  • Assist students with understanding course assignments, strengthening study skills, preparing for quizzes and examinations, and completing academic projects.
  • Provide guidance in the use of educational technology, including learning management systems, Microsoft Office applications, email, online research tools, and other digital learning platforms.
  • Assist students with developing effective time management, organization, note-taking, and test preparation strategies.
  • Schedule and coordinate tutoring sessions based on student and program needs.
  • Maintain accurate records of tutoring sessions, student attendance, and academic progress.
  • Communicate regularly with the College in the Community Coordinator regarding student progress, concerns, and recommendations for additional support.
  • Encourage student engagement, self-advocacy, and utilization of Kingsborough Community College campus academic resources.
  • Participate in student orientations, workshops, and other program activities as assigned.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information in accordance with organizational policies and applicable regulations.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of the College in the Community program.
