Turbomachinery Development Engineer

Garrett Advancing Motion•Torrance, CA
•$137,000 - $171,000•Onsite

About The Position

Garrett Advancing Motion is hiring a Wheels and Aero Development Engineer based at its Torrance, California facility. The position is part of the commercial vehicle (CV) Aerodynamics team and is linked to the Wheels and Aerodynamics (W&A) Center of Excellence. It calls for a background in turbomachinery aerodynamics and mechanical engineering, gained through education or work experience, along with autonomy and problem-solving skills to plan solutions to complex aerodynamic and mechanical challenges. The engineer will develop compressor and turbine aerodynamics for the CV portfolio, using analytical tools such as CFD and FEA and experimental test rigs. The work will be guided by a development plan established with the CV Aerodynamics Manager and will involve close collaboration with internal engineering teams to create robust stages that meet performance, durability, packaging, noise, and cost constraints and integrate successfully into customer turbocharger products. The role also supports technical problem-solving across internal teams and contributes to innovation and continuous improvement within the W&A organization.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree or higher in Aerospace or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Proficiency with turbomachinery design and aerodynamic simulation tools.
  • Proficiency with high-fidelity CFD turbomachine simulation, including Ansys.
  • Proven experience with 3D design packages such as CATIA, Onshape, or SolidWorks; programming in MATLAB or Python; and experimental turbomachinery testing, including rig concepts, data analysis, and post-processing.
  • Knowledge of compressor, turbine, and/or expander design, in aerodynamics and/or mechanical engineering.
  • Strong drive to deliver, ability to multitask and work in multicultural, cross-functional teams, and focus on continuous improvement.
  • Ability to grasp technical issues quickly and relate multiple observations to one another.

Nice To Haves

  • Machine learning experience, including DNN or auto-optimization.
  • Experience with commercial optimization software.
  • Testing and analysis skills, including FEA and CFD post-processing analysis tools.

Responsibilities

  • Design, test, and qualify next-generation compressor and turbine aerodynamics for integration into the commercial vehicle portfolio using analytical CFD/FEA and experimental test-rig tools, following a development plan established with the CV Aerodynamics Manager.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering customer teams to design robust compressor and turbine stages that meet performance, durability, packaging, noise, and cost constraints and integrate into customer turbocharger products.
  • Support resolution of technical problems and performance challenges by providing aerodynamic and mechanical engineering support to internal application teams and/or Centers of Excellence.
  • Collaborate with W&A organization team members to increase innovation and continuously improve team tools and processes.
