About The Position

AECOM is seeking a Mid-Level to Senior Tunnel Ventilation Engineer to support our Americas Tunnel Practice in New York, New York. This role involves consultancy in the design, design optimization, and construction administration of Tunnel Ventilation and Fire Life Safety systems for transit, rail, and highway projects. The projects include bridges, tunnels, and overbuilds, as well as miscellaneous industrial and utility tunnels across North America and globally. Responsibilities include developing design criteria, manuals, technical reports, designs, calculations, drawings, specifications, and engineering processes. The role also entails developing ventilation concepts and strategies, performance prediction and optimization using 1-D Subway Environment Simulation (SES) and 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to meet tenability and fire life safety requirements. Support during commissioning and construction administration is also required. Additionally, the position contributes to growing the firm’s tunnel ventilation practice through developing pursuit strategies, technical concepts, and proposal approaches, as well as identifying, attracting, and assisting in recruiting staff. Mentoring junior engineers to strengthen the tunnel ventilation center of excellence and grow technical expertise is a key aspect. The role also involves publishing technical articles, supporting technical client relationships and marketing, and collaborating with Risk and Quality Leaders to recommend Risk Management and Quality Plans.

Requirements

  • BA/BS + 8 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.
  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Professional registration (PE) in at least one state, and ability and willingness to register in other states if needed.
  • Experience with Regulatory requirements for tunnel ventilation and fire life safety, including experience in road, railway, and underground spaces, including NFPA 130 and NFPA 502.
  • Experience with systems engineering, integration, equipment testing and implementation.
  • 8+ years of tunnel ventilation and underground structures related experience.
  • MS in Mechanical engineering or equivalent.
  • Thorough knowledge of various tunnel ventilation design methods and techniques.
  • Thorough knowledge of computer simulation packages and application techniques.
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations and active participation in National societies and organizations.
  • Publications in technical journals and conferences and seminars.
  • Ability and willingness to work in office with occasional travel outside NYC.
  • Competency in technical report writing, preparation, and editing for issue.
  • Experience in mechanical and electrical factory and field performance qualification of tunnel ventilation equipment.
  • Experience in load and energy modeling, LEED, Revit and facilities MEP design requirements.
  • In depth understanding and a proven track record in the application of fluid flow, heat and mass transfer governing equations.

Responsibilities

  • Consultancy in design, design optimization and construction administration of Tunnel Ventilation and Fire Life Safety systems for transit, rail, and highway projects.
  • Development of design criteria, manuals, technical reports, designs, calculations, drawings and specifications, heating and cooling load calculations, pressure loss calculations, and related engineering processes.
  • Development of ventilation concepts and strategies, and performance prediction and optimization of ventilation capacities for determination and satisfaction of tenability and fire life safety requirements using 1-D Subway Environment Simulation (SES) and 3-D Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD).
  • Provide support during commissioning and construction administration.
  • Assist in growing the firm’s tunnel vent practice with development of pursuit strategies, technical concepts, and proposal technical approaches.
  • Help identify, attract, and assist in recruiting additional staff.
  • Mentor more junior tunnel ventilation engineers to strengthen the tunnel ventilation center of excellence and grow technical expertise.
  • Publish technical articles in ISAVFT, ASHRAE, and other national and international venues.
  • Support technical client relationships and marketing.
  • Collaborate with National Tunnel and Underground Engineering Practice Risk and Quality Leaders to recommend Risk Management Plan and Quality Plan on projects.
