About The Position

RS&H is seeking an experienced Tunnel Inspector to join their Transportation-Construction Management (T-CM) team for the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel (HRBT) Expansion Project. This role primarily supports night shift operations and is crucial for ensuring the quality, safety, and compliance of tunnel construction. The inspector will observe contractor operations, document activities, verify compliance with project requirements, and contribute to the delivery of a major infrastructure project. Responsibilities include overseeing secondary grouting, concrete placement, fireboard installation, tunnel utility installation, and interior finishes. The position involves complex technical assignments in construction inspection, field documentation, contract compliance, materials observation, and stakeholder coordination. The successful candidate will maintain detailed project records, identify deficiencies, recommend corrective actions, and support quality construction practices.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent and seven years of relevant construction inspection experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in transportation construction inspection, including roadway, bridge, tunnel, or heavy civil infrastructure projects.
  • Comfortable working night shifts in an active construction environment.
  • Strong written documentation and communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving, and prioritization abilities.
  • Ability to effectively interact with contractors, project teams, and client representatives.
  • Possess a valid driver's license, be insurable, and be able to safely operate a vehicle on construction sites.
  • Passion for working outdoors and in active construction environments.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine and oversight inspections on active tunnel construction operations.
  • Monitor secondary grouting, concrete placement, fireboard installation, tunnel utility installation, and interior finishing activities.
  • Observe contractor operations to verify compliance with project specifications, plans, and safety requirements.
  • Document findings, deficiencies, and construction progress through detailed daily reports.
  • Coordinate with contractor personnel, field teams, and project management staff to address construction quality concerns and ensure timely resolution.
  • Review and interpret construction plans, specifications, and contract documents.
  • Maintain accurate records of contractor operations and significant project events.
  • Assist in identifying non-conforming work and recommend corrective actions.
  • Promote and support safe work practices in active tunnel and confined-space construction environments.
