About The Position

As a Tunnel Maintainer with the Department of Transportation, you will play an essential part in keeping tunnels safe and traffic flowing. This job gives you the opportunity to work hands-on while supporting public safety and transportation efficiency. Requirements

• Two years of experience in roadway maintenance and repair, emergency services, towing and roadside assistance, or traffic control work; or An equivalent combination of experience and training.
• Possession of an active Medical Examiner’s Certificate in accordance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration Regulations.
• Demonstrate successful operation of equipment with a manual transmission.
• Possess an active Pennsylvania Class A Commercial Driver’s License with the Air Brake Restriction (L) removed, or equivalent on their first day of employment.
• Obtain within the probationary period an active certification issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation in the operation of heavy trucks and loaders.
• Obtain additional certifications issued by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation on assigned pieces of equipment during the probationary period.
• Able to perform essential job functions.

Responsibilities

• Perform cleaning, repairs, and upkeep of tunnel structures and surrounding areas
• Assist motorists and first responders during traffic disruptions and restore normal traffic flow
• Observe tunnel conditions such as airflow, fire risks, and over height vehicle concerns
• Use clear communication with employees and responders to maintain awareness during operations
• Operate vehicles, tools, and machinery required for maintenance, towing, and tunnel washing
• Deploy cones, signs, and barriers to protect workers and guide traffic during lane closures
