About The Position

The Tufting Machine Operator is ultimately responsible for all activity on the machine to which they are assigned. This role involves overseeing creelers and menders, ensuring correct yarn loading and turf inspection, accurately completing paperwork, and operating the tufting machine. The operator will perform tasks such as threading needles, fixing pull downs, changing blades and hooks, and changing backing as needed. They are also responsible for weight checks, ensuring correct yarn lots, laying out the first tufted roll for inspection, and performing various quality checks for defects like streaks, dark/light lines, and crossed ends. Additionally, the operator must manage the creel to ensure sufficient yarn supply, check roll sizes, plan for upcoming work orders, and communicate any safety concerns or discrepancies to supervisors. The role also includes additional duties assigned by management.

Requirements

  • Previous experience operating machinery in a warehouse or manufacturing setting.
  • Ability to handle materials and perform basic materials handling tasks.
  • Organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Time management with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to set up machines, monitor their operation, perform routine maintenance, and ensure the quality of finished products.
  • Good attention to detail.

  • Ability to work well in a team environment.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee creelers and ensure correct yarn loading and tying.
  • Oversee menders to ensure proper turf inspection and mending.
  • Ensure all paperwork (roll tags, creel out tags, production orders) is filled out correctly.
  • Operate the machine, including threading needles, fixing pull downs, changing blades and hooks, and changing backing.
  • Perform weight checks and get sign-off on work orders.
  • Verify yarn lots are correct.
  • Lay out the first tufted roll for inspection and get sign-off from QC or supervisor.
  • Perform quality checks for streaks, texture issues, dark/light lines, low lines, shag lines, and crossed ends.
  • Ensure sufficient backing is available for the roll.
  • Manage the creel to ensure yarn is at the creel and cut back if necessary.
  • Check all roll sizes.
  • Plan for the next work order when nearing the end of the current one to determine yarn status.
  • Turn in work orders to the supervisor.
  • Communicate any perceived incorrect information or safety issues to the supervisor.
  • Stop the machine if anything seems unsafe.
  • Perform additional duties and accountabilities as assigned by management.
