About The Position

Tallahassee State College (TSC) is seeking a full-time TSC Police Officer to join the TSC Police Department. This role is primarily service-oriented and involves law enforcement activities specific to a school environment. The officer will work with and mentor students, disseminate information, arbitrate disputes, provide referrals, protect property, engage in crime prevention, conduct investigations, and offer other public safety services. Duties must be performed in accordance with Florida State Statutes and departmental policies, requiring independent judgment and discretion under general supervision. The candidate must be a State of Florida certified law enforcement officer and a certified School Resource Officer (SRO), or willing to undergo the training.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or its equivalent, and one (1) year of law enforcement experience; or a combination of education and/or experience.
  • Must meet the requirements of Chapter 943, Florida Statutes for certification as a Florida law enforcement officer.
  • Must be a certified police officer or in the process of obtaining certification.
  • Two (2) years of active and continuous military or other appropriate public contact experience may substitute for the required experience.
  • Appropriate college course work or vocational training may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis at the rate of 30 semester hours from an accredited college or university, or 720 classroom hours from a vocational or technical school.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified as a School Resource Officer (SRO), or willing to attend the training to become certified.
  • At least one (1) year of campus security or law enforcement experience.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols campus buildings and grounds, enforcing laws, rules, and regulations. Provides escort services and relief for dispatchers. Locks and unlocks doors. Is visible on campus, particularly in high crime areas. Conducts building checks, notifies dispatch, and documents in CAD. Ensures campus buildings are secured, especially during afternoon shifts. Reports incidents to supervisor immediately.
  • Establishes public relations and provides general information. Offers traffic assistance (directs traffic, attends to accidents, assists with parking). Provides written reports on investigations, complaints, and security issues. Reports observed safety hazards and documents incidents. Establishes credibility across campus and consults supervisor on situations outside their authority. Ensures Judicial Services receives reports for student crimes or Code of Student Conduct violations. Follows up on investigative reports and completes them with an update. Reports potential safety hazards and uses proper equipment for tasks.
  • Performs security and safety duties at off-campus facilities owned, operated, or utilized by the College. Delivers messages and locates students during emergencies. Provides staff with clear and timely messages (verbal and written). Maintains confidentiality of student information. Collects, prepares, and/or documents evidence and testifies in court.
  • Collects, prepares, and/or documents evidence and testifies in court. Ensures proper case documentation and presentation. Reports are concise. Maintains a neat and orderly appearance. Utilizes CAD by calling in all activities to dispatch.
  • Serves as Firearms Instructor.
  • Acts as Pistol Armorer.
  • Functions as Field Training Officer.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
