About The Position

Wentworth Institute of Technology is seeking applicants interested in joining the Wentworth community as a Police Officer. The Wentworth Institute of Technology police officer will provide a full range of law enforcement and security services. Job Summary: This position will investigate calls, complaints, and suspicious activity and incidents, will enforce laws, maintain order, assist people, identify criminal activity, apprehend offenders, identify the source of problems in the Wentworth community, and work with other law enforcement agencies to resolve issues. The police officer will support the department’s mission by respecting the rights and dignity of all individuals while completing the functions of their job. This position will work both independently and cooperatively to provide proactive police protection and crime prevention consistent with community policing standards. This position will ensure the Wentworth community's safety in an orderly, efficient, and professional manner. This role is expected to conduct investigations of issues and crimes which lead to identification, apprehension, and prosecution of offenders.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 21 years of age.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Commonwealth of Massachusetts POST Commission Certification and SSPO Warrant of Appointment.
  • Eligible to attend a Municipal Police Academy Training (MPTC) Full-Time Police Academy.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a license to carry a firearm in Massachusetts.
  • Must successfully pass a comprehensive background assessment that includes criminal history, driving record, medical examination, psychological evaluation, drug screening, and an inclusive appraisal of work history.
  • Possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in state of residence.

Nice To Haves

  • Graduate of a Full-Time MPTC or Massachusetts State Police Academy or equivalent.
  • POST certified.
  • Bachelor’s degree

Responsibilities

  • Enforces criminal laws, policies, rules, and regulations in a fair, consistent, and equitable manner.
  • Contacts the public in a responsive, non-escalatory manner when warning, citing, or arresting persons for violations of the law.
  • Exercises considerable judgment and resourcefulness in the investigation and arrest of criminals, and while maintaining law and order during times of emergency.
  • Performs varied duties involving the patrol of assigned areas, buildings, streets, and grounds, to provide increased protection of life and property.
  • Patrols street and grounds within assigned areas on foot, bicycle, or vehicle to deter violations and crimes.
  • Responds to emergency calls and asks for assistance in situations including, but not limited to, fire alarms, intrusion/panic alarms, and accidents.
  • Conducts investigations of assigned cases and cites or arrests when laws have been violated.
  • Investigates all complaints of criminal acts reported by the public or assigned by a superior.
  • Directs activities in accidents and disaster areas, renders first aid, and restores traffic flow.
  • Assists other law enforcement officers with warrants, apprehending criminals, crowd management, and other general law enforcement work.
  • Guards and protects university property.
