About The Position

A Trust Officer is responsible for generating new business through marketing programs and direct contact with potential business sources, while also providing exceptional service to existing trust clients. This role acts as a central point of contact for client relationships and subject matter requirements. The Trust Officer will perform various communication tasks to ensure project completion, provide in-house expertise on trust administration, and book and retain business through cross-selling. They will regularly visit assigned branches for product education, participate in community activities to build business relationships, and administer accounts satisfactorily, including maintaining files. The role involves assisting clients in achieving their planned goals within acceptable risk levels, often managing moderately complex relationships. The Trust Officer must demonstrate compliance with all bank regulations, policies, and procedures, including those related to Bank Secrecy Act, Regulation CC, and Regulation E. They may also be asked to coach, mentor, or train others as a subject matter expert, and are expected to embody the Columbia corporate culture, vision, and values. Other duties may be assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree, if one has practical trust experience, a bachelor’s degree is preferred
  • Cannon or other training, required.
  • 5 years of Trust Officer experience, required.
  • 5 years of experience managing moderately complex, multi-tiered trust relationships.
  • Knowledge and understanding of the trust data processing system, as well as general principles of trust accounting and estate tax law.
  • Strong interpersonal skills in order to effectively communicate with customers and staff.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Good analytical abilities to recognize and solve clients’ estate planning and investment issues.
  • Effective organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work in a team environment as well as independently.
  • Basic knowledge of tax preparation, particularly for fiduciary income tax returns and estate tax returns.
  • Ability to use personal computers, Windows, and related software applications.
  • Basic knowledge of the commercial banking environment to facilitate trust clients’ financial needs and the trust company’s interface with commercial affiliates.

  • Ability to develop referral network that helps generate new business to meet organization sales objectives.
  • Ability to work within a team environment to facilitate subject matter expertise on estate planning strategies.

  • Strategic thinking on business initiatives that drive new business goals.
  • Passed the CFTA Level 1 test, required.

Responsibilities

  • Provide new business for the company through marketing programs involving contact with professionals and direct contact with potential business sources.
  • Provide exceptional service to existing trust clients.
  • Act as the quarterback on relationships pertinent to client subject matter requirements.
  • Perform a variety of written and verbal communication tasks and projects in order to ensure satisfactory completion and implementation of work or projects.
  • Provide in-house expertise on issues relating to trust administration.
  • Book new business and retain business through cross-selling.
  • Call on assigned branches regularly for branch education in trust products.
  • Participate in community activities that provide opportunities to form business relationships with candidates for trust services.
  • Administer accounts in a satisfactory manner, including maintaining account files.
  • Assist clients in achieving planned goals established at the opening of their account within an acceptable level of risk.
  • Administer moderately complex relationships.
  • Demonstrate compliance with all bank regulations for assigned job function and applies to designated job responsibilities.
  • Keep up to date on regulation changes.
  • Follow all Bank policies and procedures, compliance regulations, and completes all required annual or job-specific training.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of Bank's written policies and procedures regarding Bank Secrecy Act, Regulation CC, Regulation E, Bank Security and other regulations as applicable to this job description.
  • May be asked to coach, mentor, or train others and teach coursework as subject matter expert.
