About The Position

Assists in picking-up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading the same at the warehouse; assists in navigating for the Truck Driver; ensures the accountability, security, and safety of the donations when in route; assists in maintaining the vehicle in proper working order and in compliance with established standards; assists in performing work in the thrift/family store and warehouse. When needed: Sorting responsibilities; receives, sorts, prices, and prepares donated items for display in the store; determines suitability and pricing of items based on established standards; assists in maintaining the orderliness and cleanliness of the warehouse area. Cleans and maintains the stores and storage facilities.

Requirements

• Knowledge of the assigned geographic area.

• Ability to perform general maintenance and cleaning activities for buildings and grounds.

• Ability to meet attendance requirements.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate in the English language.
• Ability to read and follow a map and/or hand-written directions.
• Ability to perform strenuous, heavy work involving the lifting and carrying of heavy objects.
• Ability to perform continuous walking, stooping, standing, and some climbing.
• Six months of experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture.
• Valid State Driver's License.

Responsibilities

• Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route in order to pick up donated items; assists in navigating the driver to destinations by reading a map and/or handwritten directions.
• Inspects donated items briefly to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures; explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
• Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into truck; packs items in truck in a manner that maximizes use of space, protects items from damage, and ensures safety.
• Prepares donation receipts for customers; ensures the accuracy and completeness of the same
• Maintains good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
• Unloads donations from truck upon arrival at warehouse; distributes items to appropriate locations in the warehouse.
• Loads truck of items to be taken to the dump.
• Performs other related work as required.
• Receives, inspects, and sorts donated items such as clothes, shoes, household items, etc. Items will be categorized according to the condition.
• Selects items suitable for store display and distributes same to the appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing; discards items in accordance with established procedures.
• Tags items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with established procedures.
• Hangs clothes on hangers and places same on clothes racks.
• Packs items in boxes and marks boxes accordingly; assists in transporting boxes to appropriate storage area.
• Prepares non-suitable clothes for the bailer.
• Lifts and carries items to the appropriate destination for further processing, storage, or displaying in store.
• Maintains warehouse area in a neat and orderly manner; cleans floors, tables and work areas.
• Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms; cleans sinks and toilets, polishes mirrors, and replenishes supplies.
• Sweeps, vacuums, mops and waxes floors; sweeps sidewalks.
• Cleans windows; dusts and polishes furniture and fixtures.
• Empties trash cans; collects trash from grounds.
• Assists in monitoring light fixtures to ensure all light bulbs are in working order; replaces light bulbs as necessary.
• Cleans donated furniture and appliances before they are priced and displayed.
• Removes trash and non-saleable items from the store to the outside trash area or dumpster in the rest of the store.
• Assumes the responsibilities of the Truck Driver as needed.
• Assists in performing work in the warehouse as needed.
• Assists in maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of the warehouse and loading dock area.
