About The Position

This position is responsible for assisting in picking up donations by riding in a Salvation Army truck and lifting, carrying, and/or hauling donations into the truck and unloading them at the warehouse. The role also involves assisting the Truck Driver with navigation, ensuring the accountability, security, and safety of donations in transit, and performing routine vehicle maintenance. Additionally, the Truck Helper may assist in the thrift/family store and warehouse operations, including sorting, pricing, and preparing donated items for display, as well as maintaining the cleanliness and orderliness of the facilities.

Requirements

  • No formal education required.
  • Six (6) months' experience lifting and hauling heavy items such as appliances and furniture, or Any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Valid State Driver's License

Responsibilities

  • Rides in a Salvation Army truck on a scheduled route to pick up donated items.
  • Assists in navigating the driver to destinations by reading maps and/or written directions.
  • Briefly inspects donated items to ensure they can be used according to established policies and procedures.
  • Explains policy to customers regarding the types of items that can be accepted.
  • Lifts, carries, and/or hauls donations into the truck, packing them to maximize space, protect from damage, and ensure safety.
  • Prepares donation receipts for customers, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Maintains a good relationship with donors to promote a favorable image of The Salvation Army.
  • Unloads donations from the truck upon arrival at the warehouse and distributes them to appropriate locations.
  • Loads the truck with items to be taken to the dump.
  • Delivers appliances and furniture purchased by customers.
  • Performs routine maintenance of the truck, checks fluid levels regularly, and coordinates/participates in repair work as needed.
  • Receives, inspects, and sorts donated items (clothes, shoes, household items, bric-a-brac) according to category and condition.
  • Selects items suitable for store display and distributes them to the appropriate area for further sorting and/or pricing.
  • Discards unsuitable items in accordance with established procedures.
  • Tags items with specially coded tickets and/or prices in accordance with established procedures.
  • Hangs clothes on hangers and places them on clothes racks.
  • Packs items in boxes, marks boxes accordingly, and assists in transporting them to the appropriate storage area.
  • Prepares non-suitable clothes for the bailer.
  • Lifts and carries items to the appropriate destination for further processing, storage, or displaying in the store.
  • Maintains the warehouse area in a neat and orderly manner, cleaning floors, tables, and work areas.
  • Cleans and sanitizes bathrooms, including sinks, toilets, and replenishing supplies.
  • Sweeps, vacuums, mops, and waxes floors, and sweeps sidewalks.
  • Cleans windows, dusts, and polishes furniture and fixtures.
  • Empties trash cans and collects trash from grounds.
  • Monitors light fixtures to ensure all light bulbs are in working order and replaces them as necessary.
  • Cleans donated furniture and appliances before they are priced and displayed.
  • Removes trash and non-saleable items from the store to the outside trash area or dumpster.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of the truck driver as needed.
  • Assists in performing work in the warehouse as needed.
  • Assists in maintaining the neatness and cleanliness of the warehouse and loading dock area.
  • Performs other related work as required.
