About The Position

The Truck Driver is responsible for on-time delivery of freight between Dollar General Distribution Centers, stores, and vendors. The role hauls and unloads multi-stop freight for Dollar General stores, handles return freight as required, and transports rolltainers to the Distribution Center. The driver safely operates a vehicle for interstate and intrastate deliveries.

The position involves transporting store-delivery freight, returns, and backhauls; unloading and reloading freight and rolltainers at delivery locations; and providing professional service to store teams, backhaul vendors, and distribution employees. The driver also completes required paperwork and records and operates in compliance with applicable laws, regulations, and Dollar General policies.

The role requires routine overnight travel for extended periods and work in severe weather conditions, including heat and cold.

Requirements

• Knowledge of applicable Department of Transportation (DOT) Regulations and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations.
• Ability to meet DOT medical and safety standards, including required drug and alcohol testing.
• Ability to squat, crouch, and reach to handle freight.
• Ability to enter and exit the vehicle cab numerous times each day.
• Ability to push and pull rolltainers weighing approximately 1,200 pounds.
• Ability to access and manually release the fifth-wheel lever and tandem pins, requiring horizontal pulling with 100 pounds of force at heights of 44 inches and 38 inches.
• Ability to occasionally lift, carry, or move freight weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Ability to install and remove tire chains, hook and unhook trailers, and secure freight.
• One year of previous tractor/trailer driving experience.
• Valid Class A commercial Driver’s License (CDL).

Responsibilities

• Transport store-delivery freight, returns, and backhauls over the road safely, efficiently, and on time, following Dollar General policies and state and federal regulations.
• Unload and reload freight and rolltainers at each delivery, including moving rolltainers via lift gate into store backrooms and unloading topper boxes onto U-boats for placement in store backrooms.
• Reload return rolltainers and products, including cardboard, totes, and empties, onto the trailer and return them to the Distribution Center or a consolidation point.
• At consolidation points, back up to an available Dollar General trailer and transfer rolltainers between trailers to create an empty trailer for a vendor.
• Secure freight and rolltainers at each stop before sealing the trailer.
• Provide professional customer service to store teams, backhaul vendors, and distribution employees.
• Complete necessary paperwork and maintain records required by state and federal laws and regulations.
• Ensure vehicle operation complies with all state and federal laws and regulations.
