About The Position

The TRIO SSS Academic Advisor will serve as a primary point of contact for a caseload of approximately 100-110 students in the UW Oshkosh TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. The SSS program aims to increase college persistence and graduation rates for first-generation, low-income, and/or students with disabilities. This role involves academic advising, life skills development, career planning, financial literacy, and financial aid assistance. The advisor will also assist in student recruitment, develop individualized success plans, monitor student progress, and collaborate with other staff and campus resources. Evening and occasional weekend hours may be required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Professional Experience working with educational programs
  • Demonstrated exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively with students, faculty, and staff.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree in counseling, higher education, or a related field.
  • Experience providing advising or counseling services in a professional capacity.
  • Experience supporting the needs of first-generation, income eligible students.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience with Student Support Services (SSS) and/or other TRIO programs.

Responsibilities

  • Provide support for an assigned caseload of student participants in the areas of academic advising, life skills development, student success development, career planning, financial literacy, and financial aid and scholarship assistance.
  • Encourage students to participate fully in the college experience including study abroad, internship opportunities and consideration of graduate school.
  • Assist in the recruitment of eligible students and the completion of an intake process.
  • Assess student participants’ needs and develop an individualized student success plan.
  • Advise students on academic planning, course selection, and navigating institutional and academic policies.
  • Facilitate semesterly advising meetings to help students set educational goals, monitor their progress, and provide resources for academic success.
  • Support student advisees who are on academic probation and/or suspension in creating an academic success plan.
  • Identify and make appropriate referrals to the Success Coach for at-risk students.
  • Monitor student progress employing developmental, proactive, and appreciative academic advising methods and document student advising meetings and interactions.
  • Monitor and track student semester enrollment status, grades, grade-point averages, and progress towards graduation.
  • Provide monthly student progress reports.
  • Serve as a main point of contact for students and offer information about educational opportunities and academic requirements.
  • Refer SSS students to other service providers on campus.
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of student contact and keep student files up to date.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of project services under the direction of the program director.
  • Keep current with trends and knowledge in the fields of student success programs.
  • Employ best practices and success strategies in the design, implementation, and assessment of the SSS/SSS STEM program components.
  • Support the efforts of the SSS/SSS STEM First-Year Experience curriculum.
  • Actively participate and engage in TRIO SSS workshops and events.
  • Provide support and guidance to student employees.
  • Participate in New Student Orientations to assist with recruitment and verify program eligibility.
  • Advocate for first-generation and limited-income students.
  • Support the university's enrollment goals.
  • Communicate and collaborate with the campus community.
  • Serve on campus committees and participate in campus events and activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the SSS/SSS STEM director.
