About The Position

TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) Peer Mentors serve as role models, guides, and resources for TRIO participants. Peer Mentors provide one-on-one and group support to help students successfully navigate college, build academic and personal confidence, and connect with campus and community resources. They build supportive and positive relationships with assigned TRIO participants, assist students in adjusting to college life by sharing strategies for time management, study skills, organization, and self-care, and encourage student engagement in TRIO activities, workshops, and campus events. Peer Mentors also connect students with TRIO staff and campus resources as needed, maintain regular communication with mentees, participate in relevant trainings, and document mentoring interactions.

Requirements

  • Completion of at least one semester of college coursework required.
  • Completion (or willingness to complete) peer mentor or leadership training provided by the TRIO SSS program.
  • Demonstrated academic success and effective study, time management, and organizational skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and the ability to build supportive, and respectful relationships.
  • Familiarity with the college experience of first-generation, low-income, or disability-eligible students and the challenges they may face.
  • Ability to model positive academic behaviors, connect students to campus resources, and maintain confidentiality.
  • Reliable, responsible, and committed to helping others succeed in college.
  • Good listening skills, ability to clearly communicate and organize material, as well as timely follow-through of record keeping and communication.
  • Experienced with Blackboard, Microsoft Office and, where applicable, course specific software.
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills as well as strong time management, self-motivation, and organizational skills.
  • Willingness to learn and be part of a supportive team.
  • Must be a current TRIO SSS participant in good academic standing.

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience supporting or mentoring peers, tutoring, facilitating workshops, or serving in leadership roles preferred but not required.
  • TRIO alumni are also eligible

Responsibilities

  • Build supportive and positive relationships with assigned TRIO participants.
  • Assist students in adjusting to college life by sharing strategies for time management, study skills, organization, and self-care.
  • Encourage student engagement in TRIO activities, workshops, and campus events.
  • Connect students with TRIO staff and campus resources as needed.
  • Maintain regular communication with mentees through meetings, texts, calls, or emails.
  • Participate in relevant trainings for professional development & team meetings.
  • Document mentoring interactions in program records as directed by TRIO staff.
