About The Position

The Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) is responsible for the oversight to ensure the preservation, protection, safety and management of our ancestors, sacred objects, archeological sites, properties/traditional cultural places (TCPs) and archives significant to the Omaha tribe, history and culture. The THPO works closely with tribal staff, cultural community members, consultants and public officials as applicable, on activities related to the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA).

Requirements

Must possess a valid Driver's License and must be insurable under tribal insurance.
Must pass background check and pre-employment drug screen.

P.L. 93-638, Indian Preference and Tribal Employment Rights Ordinance, (TERO), will be practiced, however all qualified applicants will be considered.

Responsibilities

Develop and implement the historic preservation plan with respect to properties of traditional and cultural significance to the Omaha People, within its ancestral and historic lands.
Maintain inventories of historic properties requesting maps, and site information on known Omaha sites from History Nebraska.
Cooperate, advice and assist Federal, State, Tribal, and local governments and private organizations and individuals in historic preservation issues, per approved Omaha Tribe Preservation Program.
Responsible to review, respond and monitor to THPO section 106 consultation which include but not limited to the review of any reported dated Native American human remains or burial sites, funerary objects, sacred objects and objects of cultural patrimony.
Cooperate with the Secretary of Interior, the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation, and other Federal and State agencies, local governments, and organizations and individuals to ensure that historic properties are taken into consideration at all levels of planning and development.
Maintain all grand funding and development for the THPO.
Apply for related grants to maintain and enhance the THPO program.
Ensure any grant applications are applied to.
Communicate with all Tribal, Federal, State requests for consultation as needed.
Promote the THPO program and the Omaha Tribe within the state by monitoring historic sites within the Omaha Tribal region.
Provide public information in Historic Preservation and functions of THPO.
Performs other duties as assigned.
