About The Position

The New York City Law Department's Labor and Employment Law Division is seeking a qualified person that is permanent in the Paralegal Aide civil service title for a Level 2 position. Representing the City in State and Federal Courts, and in some administrative agencies, the Labor and Employment Law Division reviews and litigates claims on a range employment issues. The chosen qualified candidate will be assigned to the trial team performing work of varying degrees of difficulty and responsibility under the supervision of supervisory paralegal staff, attorneys, and/or higher level staff.

Requirements

  • Must be permanent in the civil service title of Paralegal Aide.
  • Must have taken and passed the Paralegal Aide Civil Service Exam, and have been appointed from the Paralegal Aide Civil Service List.
  • Experience in paralegal (legal assistant) services must have involved the American Legal System.
  • Experience which is primarily legal secretarial or includes only incidental paralegal (legal assistant) services is not acceptable.
  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university.
  • An associate degree or completion of 60 semester credits from an accredited college and two years of full-time satisfactory experience, acquired in the United States, in the performance of paralegal (legal assistant) services.
  • A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization and four years of full-time satisfactory experience, acquired in the United States, in the performance of paralegal (legal assistant) services.
  • A satisfactory combination of education and/or experience which is equivalent to the above.
  • Paralegal Certification obtained in the United States from an accredited program or from a program approved by the American Bar Association can be substituted for 12 months of experience.
  • Undergraduate credit can be substituted for experience on the basis of 30 semester credits from an accredited college for 12 months of experience.
  • All candidates must have at least a four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization.

Nice To Haves

  • One additional year of pertinent paralegal experience or a baccalaureate degree in addition to the requirements listed above to be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II duties and pay of Paralegal Aide.

Responsibilities

  • Organizing and indexing exhibits.
  • Preparing trial binders.
  • Managing document-intensive files.
  • Serving as a liaison between the trial team and third parties such as witnesses, clients, vendors, experts and courtroom personnel.
  • Assisting in preparing witnesses.
  • Being responsible for transporting and setting up files and exhibits in the courtroom on the day of the trial.
  • Requesting files from outside agencies on an expedited basis.
  • Preparing and issuing subpoenas.
  • Composing correspondence and assisting with the discovery phase.
