About The Position

USAA is seeking a Subrogation Trial Attorney for one of its Florida staff counsel locations. This role involves managing subrogation matters from pre-suit through litigation, including evaluating liability, damages, and recovery potential, and driving cases to resolution. The attorney will prepare legal documents, handle hearings and negotiations, and apply practical, cost-effective litigation strategies. Responsibilities include providing clear case assessments, maintaining accurate documentation, and ensuring adherence to reporting standards and deadlines. This position offers a flexible work environment, allowing work from one of the Florida staff counsel offices (South Florida, Pensacola, Jacksonville, or Tampa) and from home. Travel to attend trials, hearings, depositions, or other case-related proceedings is expected. Relocation assistance is not available.

Requirements

Bachelor's degree; OR 4 years of relevant education and/or experience.
6 years of experience practicing law handling personal injury or civil litigation or trial cases.
Licensed to practice law in the jurisdiction(s) to be served.
Experience practicing law in the court systems within the geographic area being served.
Ability to perform online legal research.
Excellent communication and presentation skills.

Nice To Haves

Active bar admission in Florida with experience handling subrogation, insurance recovery, defense matters, including auto property damage, or liability claims, and a demonstrated understanding of carrier recovery strategies.
Proven ability to independently manage litigation from intake through trial, including depositions, motion practice, mediation, and courtroom advocacy, with a strong track record of favorable outcomes.
Demonstrated success in maximizing recovery through strategic negotiations, settlements, and litigation planning, coupled with strong analytical skills to evaluate liability, damages, and cost-benefit scenarios.
US military experience gained through military service or gained as a military spouse / domestic partner.

Responsibilities

Independently manages caseload of simple to moderate Property and Casualty insurance subrogation cases through pre-suit stage and throughout litigation including to through trial on cases assigned.
May handle and/or assist with complex litigation cases.
Appears in court as required, including arbitrations, trials, and mediations.
Provides legal advice to clients and P&C Claims team members.
Develops, and implements legal strategy and ongoing budget projections to Claims Litigation, and clients, as appropriate on assigned cases.
Prepares legal pleadings, motions, statements, memoranda, trial briefs and other legal documents on assigned cases.
Conducts direct settlement negotiations with plaintiffs' attorneys.
Stays current on all relevant statutes, case law, office, and trial-related technology.
Attends courses as assigned to maintain appropriate skill sets for trial.
Provides training to support staff, P&C Claims and Claims Litigation regarding changes in law, litigation and/or and other processes.
Ensures risks associated with business activities are effectively identified, measured, monitored, and controlled in accordance with risk and compliance policies and procedures.
