About The Position

The Daytona Beach News-Journal is seeking a curious and digitally savvy journalist to fill a critical role as a trending growth and development reporter covering the fast growing areas of Volusia and Flagler counties on the Atlantic coast in northeastern Florida. In addition to trending news, the reporter will focus on all types of commercial and residential development issues as well as the real estate market. They will look at housing, redevelopment, new and existing businesses, community health and demographics in a way that engages our audience and tells readers why these stories are important to them.
This reporter must be able to identify trends and hot topics, pivot between different topics and consistently produce content that resonates with readers, answers their questions and helps grow our audience.
This reporter must be comfortable using alternative story formats, social media, video and other tools to supplement traditional story forms. The reporter also will use metrics to understand what’s resonating with readers and will be willing to experiment and innovate to reach new audiences. Duties include writing compelling headlines and employing SEO best practices to draw in readers.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in communications, journalism, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Minimum of two years of reporting experience.
• Energetic self-starter and quick thinker who can identify stories that matter.
• Ability to multitask and perform well in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines.
• Ability to work collaboratively and efficiently with a team of journalists.
• Strong communication skills, news judgment, and headline-writing ability.
• Strong interpersonal skills, including empathy and compassion.
• Proficiency in social media platforms, including but not limited to Facebook, Twitter, Threads, Instagram, TikTok, and Reddit, with experience engaging readers in this public space.
• Experience shooting and editing photos and videos on an iPhone.
• Excellent writing, spelling, and grammar skills with knowledge of AP style.
• Understanding of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
• This role requires a valid driver’s license, reliable transportation, and the minimum liability insurance required by state law.
