About The Position

Under general supervision, this role involves trimming and pruning trees from the ground and by climbing. Work is performed throughout the community as a member of a specialist crew, working independently or as lead worker of a sub crew. The position involves regular contact with residents. When assigned as lead worker, the role coordinates the work of two or more workers engaged in trimming and pruning trees. This includes planting and removing trees, cleaning sidewalks and streets after trimming or removal, loading trucks, and driving to disposal sites. The role also involves maintaining job sites and work areas in a safe and orderly manner, operating and maintaining various types of equipment, and following up on resident complaints.

Requirements

• Ability to read, write and apply common sense understanding to the carrying out of oral or written instructions.
• Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the job.
• Knowledge of the types and methods of care of the trees found in the Community.
• Knowledge of the field maintenance requirements of assigned equipment.
• Ability to perform manual work requiring physical strength and stamina appropriate to the area of assignment.
• Ability to read and write work-related job instructions in English.
• Ability to communicate effectively with others in English.
• Skill in climbing.
• Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment appropriate to the nature of assignment.
• Possession of a valid California driver’s license.
• Possession of a Class B Commercial Driver’s license (F-800 Chipper Truck).
• Possession of certification by the International Society of Arboriculture as a “Tree Worker” or “Arborist” with certification union wages at technical level.
• Stands for periods of up to 5 hours.
• Continually lifts and carries up to 20 lbs.
• Occasionally lifts and carries up to 50 lbs.
• Continually balances, climbs, uses hands to finger, grasp, pull, reach and stoop.
• Frequently pushes.
• Occasional crawls, crouches and kneels.
• Works daily at heights of up to 100 feet.

• Considerable experience in grounds maintenance work or equivalent combination of education and experience.

• Coordinates the work of two or more workers engaged in trimming and pruning trees when assigned as lead worker.
