About The Position

Koppers Inc. is seeking a Treating Operator to join their team. This role involves operating and maintaining treating equipment, boilers, and hazardous material handling systems. The operator will be responsible for ensuring proper chemical treatments, maintaining equipment, and adhering to safety and environmental regulations. This position requires mechanical aptitude, the ability to work with hazardous materials, and a commitment to a Zero Harm culture.

Requirements

  • Able to read, understand and perform computer data entry of all related paperwork.
  • Able to read and understand gauges and recording charts within the treating area.
  • Understands boiler operation and maintenance.
  • Mechanical aptitude.
  • Possesses sufficient physical strength to handle heavy mechanical equipment like cylinder doors.
  • Able to wear respirator.
  • Willingness to work outdoors.

Responsibilities

  • Obey "General Rules for All Employees".
  • Check "Trams Loaded" report to ensure proper charge is plugged in cylinder.
  • Assign a number to each charge.
  • Verify correct cubic feet, tank readings, water meters (on boulton charges), vacuum (on boulton charges to customer specifications), initial air pressure, temperature (on air dry charges to customer specification), and pressure (all charges to customer specification).
  • Take Boulton charges off early using a drop-off method.
  • Ensure all charge reports are filled out properly and attach the chart with each charge.
  • Perform routine maintenance on all treating equipment including vacuum, fill, pressure, unloading, gaskets, and packings.
  • Unload and transfer chemicals.
  • Operate and maintain the boiler and keep required records.
  • Light off and shut down the boiler.
  • Apply "restricted use" pesticides as an "applicator technician".
  • Clean door pit and place hazardous wastes into proper containers.
  • Operate and maintain creosote storage tanks.
  • Operate, adjust, and maintain wastewater collection and treatment system.
  • Respond at a first responder operations level to non-incidental spills of Creosote Solution, other hazardous chemicals, and hazardous waste.
  • Report all reportable spills or releases to Plant Management or proper authorities (NRC, LEPC, Fire District) within required time frames.
  • Perform general plant housekeeping to ensure Treating and effluent areas are clean and free of debris.
  • Visually monitor rainwater and snowmelt runoff from drip tracks and other treating areas to ensure runoff controls are operating correctly.
  • Receive and offload shipments of hazardous material by rail and truck.
  • Work safely with and around hazardous materials including flammable or combustible liquids.
  • Always use correct PPE.
  • Wear respirator for certain routine activities and potentially during emergencies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
