About The Position

The Traveling Safety Specialist is responsible for monitoring and maintaining a safe workplace in compliance with safety, health, and environmental regulations. This position supports the organization through reporting, communication, and advisory guidance to project staff. It has a strong influence on overall safety performance at the construction site. The primary goal is to maintain awareness, knowledge, and preparedness across projects to reinforce a culture that prioritizes effective safety practices. This position will provide overall leadership, professional knowledge, and expertise in the administration and support of Health and Safety processes, including regulatory agency compliance, company policies, and human capital development. This position reports to the Safety Director for administrative purposes, but closely collaborates with the safety and execution team to coordinate program efforts and outcomes. This position requires daily travel to jobsites. This is a full-time FLSA-exempt position. The position requires 40 work hours per week with the ability to work more if necessary.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Safety, Construction Management, Project Management, or Engineering, or military equivalency
  • Must be bilingual in English and Spanish
  • 5-10 years of practical field experience or military equivalency
  • Microsoft Office Suite of products (Outlook, Word, Excel, Project, PowerPoint, etc.)
  • OSHA 30, STSC, or CHST certifications
  • CPR, AED, and First Aid certifications
  • Procore
  • Must be highly motivated and possess excellent interpersonal communication skills
  • Must be able to travel and willing to work occasional weekends if needed
  • Ability to work in an effective, safe manner with little supervision

Responsibilities

  • Mentors, trains, and conducts critical conversations with Safety Specialists.
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local legislation and codes governing construction site environmental health and safety
  • Enforces policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulations and guidelines
  • Provides training and communication to the project team to ensure safe execution of projects.
  • Communicates routinely with the execution team and contractors, encouraging continuous improvement of safety performance
  • Creates and maintains site-specific safety and health plans for the project.
  • Interfaces with regulatory agencies, staff members, trade contractors, and key client personnel (as applicable) to formulate corrective actions
  • Manages personnel training and ensures corrective action follow-up is completed.
  • Performs, reviews, and enforces accident investigation, data analysis, and recurrence prevention programs and procedures
  • Serves as subject matter expert and resource for critical activity reviews.
  • Works with execution teams to positively encourage the development and support implementation of their ideas
  • Works with the execution team and trade contractors to ensure unsafe conditions are remedied in a timely manner.
  • Utilizes Behavioral-Based Safety (BBS) practices
  • Attends conferences, meetings, and workshops to keep up to date on new safety methods and procedures applicable to codes and regulations, or to maintain the required level of certification and continuous education
  • Studies and prepares to take safety certification exam – STSC, CHST, ASP, etc. (It is expected that you will complete the STSC exam in the first year of employment, then prepare to take the next level exam following.)
  • Provides one-on-one training on specific safety subjects
  • Coordinates and prepares reports, training manuals, and programs.
  • Stays updated on new regulations and implements operational compliance measures as required.
  • Responds and aids in all emergency situations
  • Develops accident investigation reports to track and prevent recurrence of incidents and to ensure information on incidents is shared adequately across the organization.
  • Manages the process for post-incident investigations and lessons learned
  • Conducts (or coordinates through other field staff) on-site reviews and audits of safety protocols.
  • Ensures site safety by enforcing CSM, Owner, Contractor, and Regulatory safety requirements.
  • Immediately addresses critical safety concerns arising in the field, working with all parties involved to determine a corrective plan of action.
  • Performs weekly safety inspections and observations, with written details and photos, and communicates to site execution teams.
  • Ensures adherence to owner and CSM safety rules and regulations
  • Intervenes to understand behaviors and determine a corrective action plan with employees whose work habits require correction
  • Reports all Incidents per the CSM Group policy.
  • Reports, documents, and communicates all regulatory site visits per CSM Group safety policy.
  • Reports all safety violations to onsite project managers, superintendents, directors, and subcontractors following onsite safety visits
  • Orders, tracks, and distributes safety supplies
  • Communicates with CSM Safety Director and owner on all inspections, observations, and audits completed weekly.
  • Assists with regular written reports, metrics, KPIs, etc. as well as other production-related results and updates to the Safety Director
  • Monitors the execution team employees’ compliance with CSM safety requirements and reports performance to CSM leadership.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
