About The Position

GFL Environmental is seeking a Traveling Lead Driver to join their team in the Virginia region. This role involves traveling site-to-site across Virginia (80% of the time) and occasionally outside the region to support regional operations, step into leadership functions, and operate across all lines of business. The Traveling Lead Driver is a key resource for operational success, involved in leading morning crew-outs, mentoring new drivers, assisting in dispatch, and operating various trucks in the fleet.

Requirements

• Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record.
• Minimum of three (3) years of commercial driving experience.
• Minimum of one (1) year of commercial driving experience in the solid waste/hauling industry.
• Experience operating standard transmissions on commercial trucks (depending on location).
• Ability to drive and operate equipment across all lines of business (Front Load, Roll-off, Rear Load, Automated Side Load).
• Flexibility to travel frequently across the region and adapt to changing operational needs.
• Must meet criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards.
• Valid work authorization in the country where the job is located is required.

• Experience operating standard transmissions on commercial trucks (depending on location).

Responsibilities

• Safely operate commercial trucks across all lines of business, including Commercial Front Load, Roll-off, Residential Rear Load, and Residential Automated Side Load.
• Travel to GFL locations within the Virginia region (80% of the time) and occasionally outside the region as operational needs require.
• Assist with daily driver crew-outs, debrief processes, route analysis, scalehouse, and dispatch operations.
• Monitor daily pre/post-trip inspections, conduct weekly vehicle inspections (Safety Lane), ensure adherence to company safety and regulatory standards, and coordinate with shop managers on truck maintenance and repairs.
• Serve as a mentor to existing drivers, conduct new hire training observations, sign-offs, and coaching events.
• Courteously interact with customers and the public along routes, maintaining clean customer sites and representing GFL positively.
