About The Position

This is a temporary position with no leave or retirement benefits. Temporary employees working an average of 30 or more hours per week may be eligible for health insurance coverage under the High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP). Permanent and time-limited NC State Government employees must separate from their permanent or time-limited position to work in a temporary position. All temporary employees are limited to one NC State Government temporary assignment at a time. Individuals hired into a temporary State job must be fully qualified. OSHR supports the Governor's Job Ready initiative and seeks to expand temporary skill sets to enhance qualifications for State government and private sector jobs. Exposure to an agency's culture, process, procedures, and potential learning opportunities can provide valuable experience for those seeking permanent employment with the state. This temporary position is with NC Commerce - Tourism, Film, and Sports Development, located at I-85 N. Welcome Center / 231 Interstate I-85N, Norlina NC, Warren County 27563.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to learn and communicate general tourism information, including basic information regarding attractions, events, accommodations, recreational, historical and geographic features of the state
  • Ability to assess and use tools available to provide customer service and complete assignments, including computers, Microsoft Office products and online search engines
  • Ability to read maps
  • Pleasant demeanor with the ability to communicate tactfully and be cordial with all types of people
  • Ability to compile information and communicate it accurately
  • Ability to make group presentations

Nice To Haves

  • General knowledge of the principles and practices of public relations, sales and customer service
  • General knowledge of promotional and publicity media suitable for use in the development of the tourism industry

Responsibilities

  • Greeting visitors, answering questions about the State of North Carolina and its tourist facilities
  • Distribute information on attractions, events, accommodations; and providing highway route information.
  • Make hotel and motel reservations
  • Maintain brochure display racks and back stock and order new and replacement brochures
  • Participate in familiarization tours and sharing experiences with other employees
  • Use available resources to satisfy visitor inquiries which includes giving occasional presentations to schools or civic groups
