About The Position

Philadelphia Health and Safe Schools (PHASeS), at the Center for Urban Bioethics at Lewis Katz School of Medicine, focuses on creating trauma-informed schools. A primary objective is to engage with community sectors, staff, parents, and children to increase their awareness and application of trauma-informed principles. Incorporating multidisciplinary approaches to wellness including art, fitness, and mindfulness, the PHASeS team provides educational coaching, parenting guidance, and models trauma sensitive values to empower the school community. A principal endeavor of the program is to transform nearby public K-8 schools into urban trauma sensitive beacons. Providing safe and welcoming trauma-informed schools for children to learn, teachers to educate, and a community to grow will elicit openings to achieve educational milestones, generate a climate of sustainability, and engender greater academic and social equity. The Trauma Specialist will provide trauma sensitive education, intervention, consultation, outreach, counseling, training, coaching and case management for those individuals, families, schools, and/or communities who have been directly, secondarily or vicariously exposed to and/or impacted by trauma.

Requirements

  • Master’s Degree in Social Work, Education, or related field
  • At least five years of related trauma informed experience, training and/or community engagement; and/or at least five years of previous counseling experience
  • Previous crisis intervention experience
  • Previous experience in community engagement.
  • Demonstrated computer skills and proficiency with MS Office Suite software programs
  • Ability to obtain ACT 33 Child Abuse Clearance
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, along with the ability to work with a diverse constituent population of students, faculty, staff, project participants and partnering organizations
  • Demonstrated ability to handle sensitive situations with professionalism and diplomacy
  • Demonstrated ability to handle confidential information
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem solving skills
  • Demonstrated organizational skills, along with the ability to be detail-oriented and maintain documentation.
  • Ability to provide trauma informed emotional support, counseling, education and coaching
  • Ability to travel to off-site locations that may not be accessible via public transportation
  • Strong sense of discretion and professionalism
  • Compassionate and approachable personality

Nice To Haves

  • Licensed Professional Counselor, fitness and wellness professional, or related field preferred
  • Active professional state license preferred

Responsibilities

  • Developing trauma informed assessments for schools, communities, and/or systems
  • Utilizing trauma sensitive/informed modalities and therapeutic interventions with individuals and systems
  • Addressing symptoms of trauma in schools, communities, and/or systems; providing referrals and intensive support services to assist in successful connection to resources, including, school, family, social supports and services
  • Facilitating groups
  • Disseminating trauma sensitive information to staff, families, community groups, local leaders, and the general public
  • Recording data
  • Participating in school based and community meetings
  • Maintaining an open line of communication with supervisor, personnel, staff, volunteers, individuals, and/or family members.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
