About The Position

The Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University is seeking an academic trauma, acute care, and critical care surgeon. This faculty position is primarily based at Rhode Island Hospital, a Level I Trauma Center and the principal teaching hospital of Brown University, with opportunities at affiliated hospitals. The role is 80% clinical, focusing on trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and surgical critical care. The successful candidate will also engage in teaching, mentoring, and collaborating with trainees within a strong academic setting, supporting a General Surgery Residency Program and a Surgical Critical Care Fellowship.

Requirements

  • Board certification or eligibility in general surgery.
  • Specialty certification in trauma/critical care.
  • Completed fellowship training in Surgical Critical Care (and/or Trauma/Acute Care Surgery).
  • Strong clinical background in acute care surgery, trauma, and critical care.
  • Scholarly participation in research and educational programs.
  • Demonstrated excellence in trauma surgery, emergency general surgery, and critical care.
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and mentoring surgical residents, fellows, and medical students.
  • Ability to contribute to scholarly activity aligned with an academic surgical career.
  • Ability to thrive in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment, including ICU leadership.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in patient care activities, including inpatient service, call coverage, ICU, and outpatient clinics.
  • Perform procedures pertinent to trauma/critical care and general surgery.
  • Teach medical students and train general surgery residents.
  • Serve as a preceptor for the Core Clerkship in Surgery, Fellowship in Trauma/critical care, and clinical electives for medical students.
  • Participate in interdisciplinary teaching programs.
  • Pursue basic, translational, or clinical research programs.
  • Participate in national, regional, and institutional clinical research protocols.
  • Maintain a positive working relationship within the Division of Acute Care Surgery, Department of Surgery, and The Warren Alpert Medical School.
  • Attend Faculty and Staff meetings.
  • Serve on Medical School, Hospital, and Department committees.
  • Work with faculty, the Division Chief, and the Chair of Surgery to achieve departmental and divisional goals.
