About The Position

This role will be responsible for driving and operating a refuse collection vehicle or street sweeping vehicle on an assigned route. Requirements

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • 1 year of related experience and/or training.
  • Valid South Carolina Commercial Driver’s License – Class B.

Responsibilities

  • Drives and operates an assigned collection vehicle in a safe manner on an assigned route for the collection of refuse.
  • Operates multiple types of equipment.
  • Learns routes and interprets route maps.
  • Places refuse in the collection vehicle either by picking up the container manually or by the use of a semi-automatic container lifting system.
  • Uses a broom, shovel or pitchfork, or other safe means to pick up loose or spilled garbage or trash.
  • Places empty cans off street, away from mailboxes, after emptying in a neat and tidy manner.
  • Completes pre- and post- route checks of assigned vehicle and route reports on a daily basis.
  • Maintains assigned safety equipment and uses it properly at all times.
  • Assesses and reports any unexpected mechanical problems to prevent further vehicle damage and/or unsafe operation.
  • Reports environmental code violations to supervisor.
  • Trains subordinates familiarizing the Driver-in-training with the responsibilities of a Driver.
  • Assumes the responsibilities of the Route Leader or Route Supervisor as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
