About The Position

This is an individual contributor role responsible for operating the Mid-Size Trap Shear to cut trapezoids out of steel coil. The position involves programming and operating a PLC-controlled trapezoid shearing machine, moving cut pieces to stacks for the brake press, and monitoring the quality of incoming steel to identify substandard material. The operator will use hand banding equipment, tape measures, and micrometers, and will perform calibration and setup for coil or thickness changes.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Strong Mechanical Aptitude for setting up offsets and blades
  • One year of operating Oxy-Acetelyne and Plasma cutter
  • 6 months of machine preventative maintenance
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of relevant experience
  • Ability to read and decipher blueprints and flat sheets without assistance and use them to properly shear scheduled work
  • Ability to make mathematical calculations in preparing product or setting up the machinery
  • The ability to occasionally lift up to 50 pounds with up to 20 pounds as the most frequent lift
  • The ability to physically perform the requirements of the tasks assigned
  • Must possess acceptable work history and attendance record

Nice To Haves

  • One (1) year of previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment
  • Ability to operate overhead cranes from the bridge or shop floor using remote
  • Minimum one (1) year working with complex PLC controlled, mechanical shearing or similar equipment
  • Knowledge of basic programming and set-up of PLC controlled machinery
  • The ability to communicate and interact with coworkers in a professional manner
  • Close attention to detail and follow work instructions

Responsibilities

  • Perform basic programming and setup of PLC controlled machinery.
  • Troubleshoot operating malfunctions.
  • Perform operator's maintenance of the equipment.
  • Read and interpret blueprints, flat sheets, and routings to cut parts correctly.
  • Complete shop mathematics including conversion of decimals to fractions.
  • Operate overhead cranes from the bridge or shop floor using a remote.
  • Understand the properties of steel to control the shape of sheets.
  • Program machine to proper dimensions of desired plate.
  • Monitor various machine parts simultaneously.
  • Operate multiple types of overhead cranes for different operations functions.
  • Maintain basic functions of machine operations (preventative maintenance).
  • Actively participate in department LEAN activities.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Safety through excellent safety practices and behaviors.
  • Conform to all Valmont safety policies and procedures.
  • Move traps to stacks in front of the brake press.
  • Monitor the quality of incoming steel and determine when material is substandard.
  • Use hand banding equipment, tape measures, and micrometers.
  • Perform calibration and setup of both pieces of equipment for changes of coil or thickness.
  • Identify materials (coils) for proper processing of work.
  • Use a Grinder to remove burs from sheets due to poor edge quality.
  • Use precision measuring instruments to check incoming material and to verify that finished product meets specifications.
