This role involves direct patient contact and frequent interaction with nurses, radiology techs, desk staff, and door attendants. The Transporter is responsible for safely and efficiently transporting patients, visitors, and patient-related items. A key part of the role is providing detailed verbal communication to the care team during patient handoffs, including confirming patient identification. The position requires independent work with minimal supervision, knowledge of smartphone use, and the ability to manage transport requests via computer or phone. Transporters must safely operate various motorized patient transport equipment, disinfect equipment after each use, and request maintenance as needed. They also perform wheelchair roundups. Employees in this role will stand and/or walk 10-12 miles per 8-hour shift, frequently push/pull patients up to 200 pounds and occasionally up to or exceeding 350 pounds. They will transport patients requiring special equipment such as oxygen, intravenous pumps, and wound vacs, and use various medical equipment while partnering with the healthcare team to ensure patient safety. This includes completing an oxygen warning card and adhering to medical isolation precautions, protocols, and PPE requirements, confirmed via Epic information and the patient’s care team. With assistance from the medical care team, they will perform lateral slide transfers using a slider board and sheet, and occasionally assist with connecting/disconnecting ceiling lift slings. Patient and visitor assistance is provided as necessary. Critical care patients may require transport with a Nurse and/or Respiratory Therapist accompaniment. The Transporter must monitor the patient’s condition during transport when not accompanied by patient care staff, be aware of the patient's medical condition en route, and recognize changes that may require a medical emergency call. Working hours may include days, evenings, overnights, holidays, and weekends with rotating days off. Staff may be required to attend meetings outside of normal work hours and assist in training new employees. A minimum of 80 hours of on-the-job training is required.
