Transporter / Patient Escort - Emergency Services - Per Diem
About The Position
The ED Transporter is responsible for providing and supporting patient care and an exceptional patient experience in the ED. This role involves assisting patients with ambulation, transporting them via wheelchair or stretcher, performing 1:1 suicide watch, responding to call bells, and acting as a sitter when requested. The transporter also measures and documents vital signs, provides support and information in the waiting area, communicates patient/family changes to the nursing staff, performs EKGs, conducts hourly rounding, identifies and reports equipment repairs, and stocks ED supplies. Additionally, the role may include clerical tasks and participation in staff meetings and shared governance.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Previous customer/patient relations experience preferred
- Experience in a healthcare setting preferred
Responsibilities
- Transports patients into and out of the ED including assisting patients from private vehicles, moving patients via wheelchair, stretcher, or hospital bed
- Performs 1:1 suicide watch as requested
- Responds to call bells
- Performs the sitter role as requested
- Measures and documents vital signs accurately and timely
- Presents in the ED waiting area providing support and information to patients and families awaiting care or test results
- Keeps Nurse First or Charge Nurse aware of patient or family changes or increased anxieties
- Alerts RN to any patients expressing the desire or demonstrating behaviors concerning for leaving without being seen
- Performs EKGs as ordered by the provider or per Nursing protocol orders
- Performs hourly rounding in conjunction with the ED RN; documents same in the EHR
- Identifies needed repairs to equipment or department and submits work orders for same
- Stocks and organizes ED supplies and equipment including dietary supplies
- Performs clerical tasks and duties as assigned
- Supports departmental operations as assigned
- Participates in ED staff meetings and ED shared governance
