About The Position

This posting is for a Transportation Worker IV in the Mecklenburg County Maintenance Unit. This position will operate various pieces of equipment including bulldozer, excavator, backhoe, skid steer, tandem dump truck, front end loader, tractor trailer, lee boy asphalt maintainer, motor grader, rollers, and other pieces as needed on the various crews. This position will also serve as a lead worker of a highway maintenance crew. Must carry out complete oral and written instructions. Responsibilities include installing traffic control and erosion control devices, roadway grading, machining unpaved roads, pavement repair, pipe installation, manual tree and brush removal, debris and litter removal, snow plowing, spreading salt, and salt brine application. Work will require exposure to all types of weather conditions such as ice, snow, difficult terrain, dust, extreme heat and cold, high volumes of traffic and heavy construction equipment. Work requires the ability to work on uneven surfaces and slopes. This position is subject to emergency callback and scheduled night work during adverse weather or other circumstances. The ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions are required. This position is subject to outside and inside environmental conditions, extreme cold, extreme heat, noise, vibration, hazards, and oils. Visual acuity is required. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle. Safety toe shoes are required. Must safely be able to lift and carry 50 lbs. A Class A Commercial Driver’s License with Tanker (N) endorsement is required for this position. Pre-employment drug testing will be required. As a condition of employment, a release form (ALCDRG-01) and a background statement (ALCDRG-06) must be completed and signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. Prospective drivers must meet the following standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles: No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated (Note: Employees permanently residing in adjacent states may operate a DOT vehicle using a current, valid, appropriate driver's license from their state of residence.) If a driver applicant has possessed an out-of-state driver’s license in the past ten years, the driver’s record from the state(s) involved shall be obtained. Such applicants and those who currently possess an out-of-state driver’s license will be responsible for providing their driving records from the appropriate states. Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT drug testing and post offer employment evaluation.

Nice To Haves

• Knowledge of Intermediate Work Zone Safety and NCDOT Workplace Safety policy and practices
• Experience in one of the following: shoulder and ditch maintenance, pipe installation, or asphalt patching
• Demonstrated ability to supervise and train others in equipment operations; as well as directing the daily activities of a work crew
• Experience in snow and ice removal operations
• Experience in the operation of at least 2 pieces of the following equipment: backhoe, tandem dump truck, motor grader, front end loader, forklift, force feed loader, asphalt distributor, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, track excavator, skid steer, or sweeper
