About The Position

This position is for a Transportation Worker II in Henderson Bridge Maintenance. The work involves a wide range of progressively responsible tasks in the preventive maintenance, repair, and construction of bridges, pipes, and culverts in Henderson and Polk counties. The role requires a broad range of skills across various functional areas, including pile driving, carpentry, concrete work, and machine operation. Responsibilities include the repair and replacement of culverts, bridges, large diameter pipes, bulkheads, and pile clusters. Additional tasks involve sandblasting, lead paint removal, painting, steel fabrication, and straightening steel beams, as well as trenching, shoring, bushing, clearing and grubbing. The position requires the ability to stand and walk on uneven terrain, climb, lift a minimum of 50 lbs., and communicate effectively. Candidates must not be afraid of heights and will be exposed to extreme conditions such as ice, snow, dust, extreme heat and cold, heavy traffic, and construction equipment. Safety toe footwear is needed. Position requires work during any adverse weather such as snow and/or ice, tornadoes, hurricanes, etc. which can lead to working extended daily hours, weekends, and holidays. Employee will be subject to outside extreme environmental conditions, in addition to hazards at highway construction sites, including heavy equipment and highway traffic. Additionally, candidates must be available for emergency call-back situations that may occur outside of normal working hours. The selected candidate must be able to legally operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date. Either possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License must be obtained through completion of on-the-job training and all requirements mandated by Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations (Federal Registry 49 CFR 383) within 360 days of the date of hire. As part of the hiring approval process, NCDOT will run a driver license check after conducting interviews, but prior to offering a position. Prospective drivers must meet specific standards to be eligible to operate NCDOT vehicles. Pre-employment drug testing is required for this position. As a condition of employment, a release form and a background statement must be signed allowing the NCDOT to check with previous employers for the past three years about controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Requirements

  • High school or General Educational Development diploma and three years of experience operating equipment directly related to the field of specialization; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to stand and walk on uneven terrain, climb, and lift a minimum of 50 lbs.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Not afraid of heights.
  • Ability to operate CDL required equipment/trucks with both manual and automatic transmissions at the time of hire or within 360 days of hire date.
  • Possession of a current Commercial Driver’s License on the date of hire, OR ability to obtain the North Carolina Commercial Driver’s License within 360 days of hire date.
  • No more than two convictions of moving violations within the past three years.
  • No convictions of an alcohol or drug related traffic offense within the past five years.
  • Valid, current North Carolina driver’s license appropriate for the type of vehicle to be operated.
  • Ability to pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • Ability to sign release and background statement for employer checks regarding controlled substances and alcohol testing.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in pipe installation and installation of erosion control devices.
  • Working knowledge of standard bridge maintenance and construction procedures.
  • Experience in at least two pieces of Bridge Category B equipment (asphalt distributor, asphalt mixer, asphalt patcher, crack sealing machine, ditching machine, force feed loader, front end loader, lube truck, asphalt maintainer, post driver, skid steer, street sweeper, tandem dump truck, tractor “A” boom mower, truck w/aerial device).
  • Experience constructing formwork (such as concrete forms for bridge repair, sidewalks, curbs, and other construction related formwork) using skilled carpentry techniques.
